Benny Golson - Reunion

Recorded: 1957

Benny Golson - tenor saxophone
Kenny Dorham - trumpet
J.J. Johnson - trombone
Wynton Kelly - piano
Paul Chambers - bass
Max Roach - drums
Tune of the day…Benny Golson - Reunion. This is actually a Gigi Gryce tune that was part of the Blakey book. It’s possible Benny wrote the intro/outro to it. Regardless it’s nice harmonized melody over the standard I’ll Remember April featuring an all-star lineup. #jazzsky youtu.be/g9joIRmiUeA

Carla Bley - Vashkar

Recorded: 2013

Carla Bley - piano
Andy Sheppard - soprano saxophone
Steve Swallow - electric bass
Tune of the day…Carla Bley - Vashkar. After doing the Tony Williams Lifetime version yesterday, I thought listening to a completely different chamber music like interpretation by the composer would be interesting. Haunting..you can just hear the tabla in your head. #jazzsky youtu.be/OR8Er04nhLg

Tony Williams - Vashkar

Recorded: 1969

Tony Williams - drums
John McLaughlin - guitar
Larry Young - Hammond B-3 organ
Tune of the day…Tony Williams - Vashkar. Lifetime Emergency! too much rock for some jazz fans. Too much free jazz for some rock fans. But groundbreaking in its power and rawness and somehow captures 1969 perfectly. Tony is a force of nature on this Carla Bley tune. #jazzsky. youtu.be/RcO8WDztdzU

Joey Calderazzo - Secrets

Recorded: 1995

Joey Calderazzo - piano
James Genus - bass
Clarence Penn - drums

Tim Hagans - fluegelhorn
Tim Ries - flute
Charlie Pillow - tenor saxophone
John Clark - french horn
Earl McIntyre - bass trombone
Tune of the day…Joey Calderazzo - Secrets. Because of Bob Belden’s horn arrangement added to Joey’s piano trio, you can’t help but get a Herbie Hancock Speak Like a Child vibe here. Joey’s orginal tune and his trio just swings here with a beautiful intensity. #jazzsky youtu.be/LttgprsrtdA

Dave Goldberg - Last Stop

Recorded: 2022

Dave Goldberg - tenor saxophone
Joe Bagg - Hammond B3 organ
Adam Nussbaum - drums
Self Promotion Sunday…Last Stop. A few years ago I was doing a drummer’s recording session. He wanted to do a bossa, handed me some chord changes and asked me to write a melody. I came up with this one, but for my own recording, I decided to go back and re-harmonize it. #jazzsky youtu.be/UqB4MDPSdPM

That’s a heck of a chart he wrote. I played it back in the day when I was at FSU.
Mel Lewis - Off The Cuff

Recorded: 1988

Composed & Arranged by Jim McNeely

Selected musicians

Joe Lovano - soprano saxophone solo
Dick Oatts - alto saxophone solo
Kenny Werner - piano
Dennis Irwin - bass
Mel Lewis - drums
Tune of the day…Mel Lewis - Off The Cuff. This Jim McNeely chart features some nice interactive brush work from Mel at the beginning before switching over to sticks. Then some tasty hi-hat work behind Lovano’s soprano. What Mel plays from 7:30 to 7:50 love it. #jazzsky youtu.be/Z-Z_dmWaAMM

At least dangerous drivers have had to take a drivers test. These children don’t have to know anything about the rules of the road. An age limit, helmet law, and drivers test is common sense if they are sharing the road with cars. Maybe the problem is worse where I live. 🤷🏻‍♂️
😂 I didn’t know caring about kids getting killed on e-bikes was a boomer thing. I almost took out 2 of them a few weeks ago, as they did an unpredictable stupid illegal maneuver. But hey, Darwin and all that, so no worries, I’ll just buff the dent out of my car.
Charlie Hunter - 20th Congress

Recorded: 2002

Charlie Hunter - guitar
Gregoire Maret - harmonica
John Ellis - tenor saxophone
Curtis Fowlkes - trombone
Derrek Phillips - drums
Tune of the day…Charlie Hunter - 20th Congress. Charlie Hunter has to be experienced live to appreciate 1 guy cover bass & guitar with 8 strings & 2 hands. Sounds so effortless when listening to recordings, you think it’s 2 people. The slower groove at 3:00 is nasty. #jazzsky youtu.be/qUJN4odExU0

We have kids that don’t understand the rules of the road, sometimes trying to share lanes with cars, sometimes on the sidewalk, zipping across crosswalks, not pressing the button, because they are too lazy get off the bike to do it. It’s the Wild West. My next door neighbor died on one by the way.
Tell me they aren’t all motorized E-bicycles like I see here in the states. Putting an “optional” motor on it, is like adding a hamburger option to the salad bar. Not to mention people are killing themselves on E-bikes going 32-45 kph. We have no age limits, no required helmets or licenses.
Clifford Jordan - Firm Roots

Recorded: 1975

Clifford Jordan - tenor saxophone
Cedar Walton - piano
Sam Jones - bass
Billy Higgins - drums
Tune of the day…Clifford Jordan - Firm Roots. Straight-ahead Jazz wasn’t dead in the 70’s, you just have to go looking for it. The Magic Triangle of Walton, Jones, and Higgins is smoking here as Jordan can just relax and blow over the top of what they are laying down. #jazzsky youtu.be/ZtGG8kVVwks

Steve Coleman - Djw

Recorded: 2017

Steve Coleman - alto saxophone
Jonathan Finlayson - trumpet
Miles Okazaki - guitar
Anthony Tidd - bass
Sean Rickman - drums
Tune of the day - Steve Coleman - Djw. Around the time this was recorded, I took a lesson with Steve to try to understand what the hell he is doing. After 4 hours, I kind of get it, can’t do it, don’t know how to apply it to my music, but that’s ok. I’m happy to enjoy. #jazzsky youtu.be/0mbCXYNSoHI
