Would have loved a whole flashback arc about how hard it was to build Greed Island while Ging sits around and asks for more infeasible stuff to be put in

I’m very earnest and love getting to experience our world and what it has to offer (even with all the bullshit in it) so I adore way this series believes in what it’s depicting, whether it’s a character struggling against fate, or a guy using weird magic to make the best food you’ve ever eaten

The violence and bizarre and ridiculous moments get a lot of attention and I love those aspects too so I get why, but I think people don’t see how each story arc uses those elements to show how the heroes and villains fight for what they believe in or are searching for, proving that they matter

I’m up too late and thinking too much about how the core of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is being a celebration of humanity and exploring how people can rise against the struggles in their lives. It’s such a wonderful affirmation of life and the journey it takes us on

I wish it wasn’t Mappa making it tho, that series deserves a better studio

Very nice to see Dorohedoro’s next season get a release window as I start collecting the volumes and becoming obsessed with it again

Yes I love her writing. I watched a playthrough of Pied Piper a couple of days ago and was blown away by how good the story was. Hopefully one day she’ll come back to write a game

Monolith needs to make another narratively dense RPG. I love the Xenoblade games and they definitely have some of this stuff, but not to this degree

Fair, I just assumed that line was tied to the Mary Magdalene stuff, and yes they love dropping random references and expecting you to know what it is, like how Fei from Xenogears’ mom is most likely named after a psychologist who argued that nurture is the main factor in a child’s growth

That is fucking buck wild and incredible foreshadowing at the same time

Finished walking a playthrough of Xenosaga Pied Piper and god does it tell a great story. I really liked Xenosaga 1 but it’s just an introduction to everything the series wants to cover, so getting the tragedy of Ziggy’s backstory while fleshing out the setting and doing it this well is impressive

It can be a rhythm action platformer

I’m someone where when I experience a piece of art, I like to think about what the main theme or message of a series is so I can start a conversation about it, and I just can’t do that with Demon Slayer. Like you said, it was made to be popular, not to actually say anything or share a perspective

The gameplay is an interesting mix of tried and tru turn based mechanics and new ideas that the game doesn’t do a great job at fully explaining, but are fun to engage with. I think it can be refined into a really good system so I’m curious to see what changes they make to it in Episode 2

Xenosaga Ep 1 is a pretty good game. I really like the slow pace, and even tho it’s clear it’s only half of the story they wanted to tell, I think they still do a good job at making this an engaging story, especially that ending

And to be clear I do really like CSM, but when Fujimoto doesn’t have a restraint for his story, it allows the frankness of his storytelling and message to shine more which is a big part of what I like about him as an artist

Exactly, and I like that Fire Punch wants to go there and really explore what it means to use violence to make change, and how people’s different beliefs and life experiences can cause them to justify terrible acts. Also I love that it gives us a great insane trans character
datgoofer.bsky.social
It’s so good, and it engages with its difficult ideas more than CSM does which is what I really like about it

Television used to be art

What I’ve seen is just loose thoughts so far so hopefully someone will do critical writing on their criticisms soon. And you’re welcome! I can imagine there’s so much to dig into with this game but you definitely got into what’s been making it an engaging game for me so far

I think that mode of viewing the show does a disservice to how it uses its visuals, character interactions, and layered symbolism and metaphors to explores the themes and characters. It’s artful in how it uses its medium and limitations to powerfully portray the struggles the characters deal with
datgoofer.bsky.social
It’s weird when Revolutionary Girl Utena is treated as an influential and important show that is ultimately too messy and abstract to deserve of love and acclaim it has, it’s a very limiting way to view the show and its execution of its story and message
datgoofer.bsky.social
Really great piece! Haven’t beaten it yet but I know the broad strokes of the story and seeing criticisms of it definitely made me think there’s cultural and historical elements the game is engaging with that aren’t well known over here so it was nice to learn about them and how the game uses them
