You've got front row seats for this show 🐾
While Indiana—along with states such as Minnesota—has been a national leader in initiatives addressing substance use disorder (SUD) and recovery, many of these innovative programs continue to fall short in addressing barriers to basic needs.
To complicate matters further, many of these low-income areas are classified as food deserts (shaded purple), meaning residents live more than 1+ mile from the nearest grocery store. Within these recovery residences, many lack access to transportation, making it even more difficult to obtain food.
In Marion County, Indiana a significant portion of recovery residences are situated in low-income ZIP Codes (shaded blue), often because housing is more affordable in these areas. Unfortunately, this isolates residents, many of whom live below FPL, in neighborhoods lacking vital resources.
Waitlist Cleared — Referrals Open!

Meals on Wheels NO Limits to Recovery program is now accepting referrals for individuals in early recovery in Marion County! Participants get weekly meals, pantry boxes, Cooking Matters classes, and a Welcome Kit with NARCAN to support health and recovery.

We can’t move forward in life until self-reflection becomes routine—until we can look inward without denial, accept what we see, and commit to changing what needs to change.

Small nonprofits aren’t powerless.

They can collaborate, form coalitions, and hold funders accountable. Sharing resources and amplifying voices ensures marginalized-led organizations receive the support they need.

United, nonprofits can reclaim power, equity, and justice. 💪
Many groundbreaking social innovations are created by leaders from marginalized communities—but without access to social capital or funding, these ideas often disappear.

Privilege continues to shape who survives and thrives in the nonprofit world. #NonprofitInequity #DEI
Government cuts to social service funding push nonprofits to seek philanthropic support.

Competition is fierce - the so-called nonprofit hunger games. The winners? Those with existing privilege.

Small, community-rooted nonprofits are overlooked—even when they’re closest to the problems.
The nonprofit sector must take lead in driving societal change; before these changes can meaningfully affect the communities we serve, they must begin in our own organizations. We must be conscientious about our internal policies and consider how they impact staff from marginalized communities.
Ultimately, for nonprofit leaders, it comes down to a simple yet profound principle: we must be the change we wish to see in the world.
It falls to the third sector, nonprofits and the charities who fund them, to do what the private and public sectors will not: transform the way our organizations operate. The Trump administration has imparted a valuable lesson—the government cannot be relied upon to enact meaningful change.
In our current political climate—where efforts to dismantle diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) initiatives are accelerating across society—it is more critical than ever for nonprofits and philanthropic charities to confront their own complicity in perpetuating inequitable policies and practices.
Bro, no lie - you killed it with this toon. The look, vibe, and everything.

True collaboration isn’t just nonprofits sharing space—it’s joining forces to tackle root causes of injustice.

We can’t solve global problems by hoarding funders. This isn’t a zero-sum game.

Real change happens when we band together.
