Mike Shildt's surprise departure from the Padres was announced as a "retirement," and team personnel are insisting it was Shildt's call to exit after feeling "worn down." However, it was hard to see him lasting in that role considering his very poor relationship with some of his coaches.
Sources suggest one of the coaches was recently so upset after feeling insulted by Shildt that a fight nearly broke out. Shildt gained a rep as blunt and temperamental in St.
Louis, where he was fired after an excellent season. In St. Louis, the feeling was he didn't treat the support staff appropriately. So the situation is somewhat similar.

Asked if death threats like Shildt mentioned are commonplace:

"That's unfortunately kind of part of it... It's unfortunate."

Preller says he thinks the Padres do a great job of handling those situations. It has come up with players and staff members over time.

Said he's a guy that kills it in the offseason every year, they expect him to be ready.

- Relating to people, being honest with players, able to deliver messages to different guys

- Values org. and winning championships

- Embraces expectations

- Loves to talk the game, gather info to make decisions

Preller said they will get a candidate list together today.

Want to get quality candidates together, more concerned with being thorough in their process than having a manager in place on a certain timeline.

Preller said the Shildt news was more of a surprise than a shock.

When they left Chicago he asked for a few days to recharge. They kept in touch while he was in NC and Saturday he told the front office he didn't have the energy to continue.

A.J. Preller said he had great conversations with Mike Shildt the last few days. Said one of the reasons Shildt considered coming back was his working relationship with Preller.

Said they are getting lunch in a few hours.
