Album #52

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

One of those albums that I had on CD in my youth but haven't listened to for many years. But it all came flooding back. Will have to add it to my #VinylCollection.

Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas

This is an album I've completely fallen in love with in recent years. Not something I'd picked up on when I was younger but I love it now.

Album #51
Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the edge of town

I've always thought of Springsteen as a vet who perfected his act over time but this is already very fully formed.

Whilst I'm on one of my regular Nick Cave kicks, I may as well make him the subject of my next #5debutalbums8084 contender.

The Birthday Party - Prayers on fire.

This belies accurate description. Violent. Rapid. Like a musical car crash, but exceptional for what it is.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Wild God.

Was listening to a podcast with Colin Greenwood and he talk about joining them on the Wild God tour last year. I was lucky enough to attend and it was exceptional. Therefore I thought I'd break it out this beauty.

Next up is a really strong contender.
R.E.M - Murmur

Talk about a band arriving fully formed. Yes they would experiment further with their sound, but this is an exceptional first effort. Seemingly no filler, this is 12 quality tracks.

English Teacher - This could be a remix album.

Remixes of one of my favourite albums of recent years.
A little hit and miss. Some are just generic dance remixes but the ones that take advantage of the already eclectic musical style of the original are great.

Echo and the Bunnymen - Crocodiles

As The Cure's debut fell just outside of this window, this is likely to be the gloomiest item on my condenser list. And gloriously gloomy it is. Everything about it is atmospheric, even the cover image.

Half century and it is a bit of a find.

Fiona Apple - Tidal

Very much enjoyed this. Nice mix of styles. Some is route one piano pop but there are elements of PJ Harvey experimentals, Tori Amos quirkiness, and Alanis Morrisette sass.

Album #49
Black Sabbath - Paranoid.

One of the joys of my musical reawakening in the last 5 years was properly diving into Sabbath.
I knew their big hits (and this album has some huge ones) but have found there is so much more to their albums.

Next on my #5debutalbums8084 listening list
The Cramps - Songs the Lord Taught Us.

First time hearing this, even 20 years after release, it was like nothing I'd ever heard before. I'm a sucker for genre defining albums, and this one is so consistent in its unique style.

Album #48
Mia - Arular

Think this may be a grower on me. Has so many elements I like in an album: a punk like delivery to her rapping, repetitive phrases interspersed, experimental soundscape. But for some reason I don't see the whole, yet.

Time to kicks off my #5debutalbums8084 journey. Got a long list I need to whittle down to 5.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasuredome.

More than an album, this is a flowing narrative with a 15 minute intro, scetches and an all timer love song.

Album #47
Prince - Purple Rain

The high point in an exceptional career. Surely has to have one of the greatest title tracks of all time.

I was so busy singing along on the drive home from work that I nearly missed my exit.

Album #46
Bob Dylan - Blood on the tracks.

I'll be honest, I'm not the biggest Dylan fan. He's had some great songs, but I often find I like them in isolation, rather than a fully body of work or even full album.
This one is a high point though.

Out of Season - Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man
Original Pirate Material - The Streets
Is This It - The Strokes
Come Away with Me - Norah Jones
O - Damien Rice

Album #45
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Has always felt like a genre defining album. The Chili Peppers weren't the only band fusing rock and funk, Faith No More being a good example, but with this album the recipe reached its zenith.

This should actually be album #44.

U2 - Boy

You can tell that this is the debut of a band who already had a lot of songs in their repertoire and could choose some belters.

They already had a unique voice. Shame it disappeared with more success.

#NowPlaying Rocket - R is for Rocket.

Saw them supporting Smashing Pumpkins at Piece Hall in the summer and they impressed me.

A good first effort. You can see a variety of influences, part early Lush, part Hole, part Cocteau Twins, at least vocally. Leads to a good mix.

Album #45
Depeche Mode - Music for the masses.

Very much the brooding end of synth pop, and a great example of it. Does seem a bit front loaded though, first half seems stronger than the latter.

Foo Fighters - Greatest Hits.

Just me and the youngest (16) for tea tonight, so I suggested she picked something from my #VinylCollection. This was her choice.

We have similar tastes so it's not difficult, but at her age she mainly knows the hits.

Lou Reed - Transformer

Back in '96 I had a tape of the soundtrack to Trainspotting and was absolutely mesmerised by Perfect Day. Wanted to hear more so tracked down Transformer on CD. I remain impressed to this day by the whole album.

Album #43
Radiohead - Amnesiac

At the time, I was disappointed with both Kid-A and Amnesiac as they were a notable diversion from the previous Radiohead albums. But as my tastes have broadened, I've come to recognize their quality. Holds up well.

Sade - Diamond Life.

How have I never listened to this before? Musically and vocally this is smooth as silk and a really enjoyable experience.
