The barrier to this happening is not the technology, nor the copyright, but the fact that nobody wants it, beyond a brief novelty phase of "Ooh, look: it's The Godfather starring Adam Sandler", or "Hey, let's take Kevin Spacey out of Se7en and replace him with Pee Wee Herman."

To be honest, I didn't actually click on or read the article (because paywall, because NYT). I just got the story from the BBC. I'm assuming it's the same.

Saved you a click: the thieves are part of a small number of gangs who then pack the stolen phones off to China.

"People sing about victory, about liberation. They’re wrong. Who won and who lost is not a question. In war, no one wins or loses. There is only destruction. Only those who have never fought like to argue about who won and who lost."

Oh, and you could plug in a microphone and re-dub recorded shows. Which is the funniest thing ever if you're 9.

Top-loading Ferguson Videostar. My dad borrowed it from work and, come to think of it, maybe never returned it. Maybe "borrowed it from work" was a cover story that I don't want to interrogate...

It had a remote control, too. But it was on a cable.

You can see a recording of the original broadcast and ads on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=te4T...

But I'm sorry, it did have the Episode IV: A New Hope opening crawl. They must have already added it the previous year, even for TV versions.

Or something taped in the early years of Channel 4, late at night, that either had a red triangle to indicate spicy content or, because they couldn't always sell enough advertising space, three minutes of the channel logo in place of an ad break.

In which recent conflicts does Hegseth think the USA was held back by their strict observance of rules of engagement?

And how smashed was he during those conflicts when everyone else was watching what really happened?

What an extraordinary cast of goons and grotesques Trump has surrounded himself with. If it was a movie you'd ask the screenwriter to tone it down a bit.

“Childhood Immunizations
The President launched a major childhood immunization effort to increase the number of children who were being immunized. Since 1993, childhood immunization rates have reached all-time highs, with 90 percent or more of America's toddlers receiving critical vaccines for children by age 2.
Vaccination levels are nearly the same for preschool children of all racial and ethnic groups, narrowing a gap estimated to be as wide as 26 percentage points a generation ago.

Motor Voter Registration Signed
The Clinton Administration made it easier for millions of Americans to register to vote by allowing registration at the same time they get a driver's license. The Motor Voter law led to the registration of more than 28 million new voters, more registered voters than the passage of the 26th Amendment, which lowered the voting age to 18 years. (PL 103-
31, signed 5/20/93).
Clinton-Gore Deficit Reduction Plan Enacted Passed without a single Republican vote, the Clinton-Gore Administration's economic plan established fiscal discipline by slashing the deficit in half — the largest deficit reduction plan in history while making important investments in our economic future, including education, health care, and science and technology research. This legislation also extended the life of the Medicare Trust Fund by three years. Fiscal discipline established by the Clinton-Gore Administration has turned the largest deficits in our country's history into the largest surplus. (PL

Fuck 'em. They don't get to buy back credibility by pretending this isn't exactly what they wanted until it seemed like the politically expedient moment to hedge their bets. Fuck 'em.

Even without squinting, all I could see was the regal Terry Nutkins on his head.

Hang on. This was not fumbling awkwardly over a long word or the nuances of a complex topic. This was having eugenic murder as the first top-of-the-head suggestion that came to mind.

"I know that not all homeless people are psychopaths" is not an apology.

"1. Men jellus of my super serum
2. Women who dunt get 'nuff of my sperms..."
Mike Cernovich tweet from 2012: "Have you guys ever tried 'raping' a girl without using force? Try it. It's basically impossible. Date rape does not exist." 2 tweets from Mike Cernovich in 2014: "Condoms destroy pair bonding. When you raw dog and share your super serum, she won't want anything else." "Semen is a man's life force. If she cheats, this means your life force is weak, needs rebuilt [sic]. When you have super serum, they never leave."

My Mandela effect moment is that I distinctly remember that, in old comic strips and cartoons, convicts would wear uniforms with arrows on them, and now nobody I mention this to knows what I'm talking about.

There's no satisfaction or relief in seeing these people fired any more, once you realise that the replacement is going to be even worse. Honestly, if Kash goes, it just going to be Matt Walsh in charge of the FBI. Or the cop from the Village People.

I love that this is a century-old silent movie reference that people still get.

The power of alliteration! And the eternal need to make fun of incompetence in law-enforcement.

You can decry political violence, or you can call for revenge. You can not do both.

You can call yourself a Christian, or you can call for revenge. You can not do both.

You can reject violent rhetoric, or you can call for revenge.
You can not do both.

A friend of mine was on Charlie Kirk's "watch list" of Black professors. She received so many death and rape threats that her university offered her a security detail for the walk to class.

This is Kirk's legacy.

You would never know it from reading all of these legacy newspaper op-eds about him.

Remember when everyone invited Christopher Hitchens onto their shows so they could pretend to be outraged when he said what they expected him to say about the death of Jerry Falwell?

Been thinking about that this week.

To be fair, falsely pinning his murder on trans people is what Charlie would have wanted.
