I kind of suspect most private (and even public) attempts to estimate the average rental cost of housing in cities with large immigrant populations are missing A LOT of units and rooms at the bottom of the market.

The little grassy medians with a few shrubs on arterial roads in our cities look at lot less cute when you realize they were often formerly dedicated streetcar lanes, as you can see on this block in DC.

Has anyone heard of any updates on the feasibility study to extend Second Avenue Subway westward along 125th St in Harlem to Broadway?

$16 million was budgeted for it in the last state budget, but I hope process for a simple study of this good idea isn't dragged out for years.

I don't quite get the disconnect between current transit riders who consistently rank the cost of fares as a low priority and the staff of local advocacy groups who seem to think it's THE most important issue?

I guess that's what donors are interested in?

How many places do NYC marathoners run under active train lines?

Honestly this spot in the Bronx was one of my favorites.

The setup of this app REALLY discouraging tagging (it makes posts borderline unreadable, and literally prohibited in photos) seems like a major barrier to making this site useful.

I honestly don't get the appeal of making that feature less helpful in finding accounts to check out and follow.

I'm glad this parking lot in Center City was eventually redeveloped into 5 new homes, but how silly is it the 46.5" proposal needed a height variance with the 375-foot-tall Drake Hotel half a block away?

Funny how consistently states and cities create these hyper-specific property tax exemption and abatement programs to address problems which should obviously just be addressed directly.

Unsurprisingly it looks like VERY few victims in NYC manage to get any support with this one.

You can tell how serious transit agencies take their Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) by how swiftly they publish data.

What does it say about SEPTA that basic metrics like Missed Trips and On Time Performance have such a lag time?

No surprise the Board NEVER discusses them at meetings.

While plenty of big name restaurants have failed in their efforts to maintain their very impressive streeteries as a result of hostile policies, nobody from the city seems to care when folks operate restaurants on the sidewalks in Harlem.

If it doesn't affect parking nobody cares?

Not every degenerate vapes on the subway, but every one vaping on the subway is a degenerate.

It always blow my mind how much of Manhattan is shorter than it was a century ago.

On the southeast corner of 127th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard mixed-use buildings with 2 floors of retail and residences above have been replaced with a single story church.

I didn't realize how big a role NYCHA played in the development and religious acceptance of shabbos elevators, in an attempt to convince Hasidim to rent apartments in high rise buildings.

Cool to see this technological innovation driven by a public housing agency.

Even in New York I can't even conceive of spending almost $6,000 for an apartment and not even getting a bedroom 🤯

Wouldn't it be awesome if the city built some pocket parks with actual amenities on some of the undeveloped land owned by Parks and other departments?

We have so many locked up community gardens closed half the year in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx. I would LOVE more fountains up here.

One thing I really love about living in a dense neighborhood is how easy it is to still get a couple thousand steps in on a lazy day by strolling down to the local movie theater for a late screening.

And with so many people out and about on weekend evenings the walk home is low stress.

As someone who remembers how hard progressive Democrats had to fight against Big Tobacco in the 90s and 00s, it's kind of blowing my mind the incoming socialist mayor of NYC is fighting to slash the fines business owners pay when they get caught selling cigarettes to kids.

So embarrassing how often GM streetcar conspiracy posts do well on NUMTOTs.

Plenty of legitimate criticisms of 20th century American urban planning and transportation policies that lefties should be making, but unfortunately too many socialists are so lazy about history.

"Instead of just fixing or eliminating bad regulations, we're going to reduce the penalty when business owners get caught violating consumer protections or safety regulations" doesn't seem great?

Is making the sale of spoiled food more profitable really the socialism NYC needs?

Harlem has so much cute cookie-cutter housing 😍

The really wide sidewalks on the boulevards in Harlem means it's not really a problem if a business expands a bit out front.

Cool to see some Christmas trees for sale knowing there's still plenty of room for pedestrians 🎄
November 29, 2025 at 9:06 PM
Seems a little on the nose for there to be posters of the literal Grinch on the locked up gate for this GreenThumb community garden, reminding the residents of Central Harlem this NYC Parks property will be closed for the next couple months.
November 29, 2025 at 8:42 PM
Some of the scaffolding at NYCHA's Abraham Lincoln Houses is so far from any buildings it's hard to even guess which facade it's supposed to be protecting residents from.

With NYC's Housing Authority funding at risk I really wish they weren't wasting precious dollars like this.
November 28, 2025 at 12:52 AM
Believe it or not, this is Manhattan.

NYC might not have as much transit oriented surface parking as other cities, but there's still a lot!
