#5: Tender is the Flesh, by Agustina Bazterrica

This one haunted me in a way that I've never felt before - it is disturbing and creepy in the best way. It is also the reason I've stopped eating beef and pork (for now).

Also has one of the best closing paragraphs in horror, imho!
#6: The Hellbound Heart, by Clive Barker

The Cenobites steal the show! This is a quick, creepy read and worth checking out for anyone that enjoyed the Hellraiser movies!
#7: The Fisherman, by John Langan

I didn't know what to expect when this was recommended to me and I still don't really know how to describe it fully but if you like Lovecraft and cosmic horror, this may scratch an itch. The setting and character descriptions were a highlight.

If this was happening in any other country you'd have journalists and analysts discussing risks of state failure
#8: Annihilation, by Jeff Vandermeer @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social

"Area X" is somehow changing the local environment and a government agency is trying to learn whatever they can about it. The Southern Reach series is such a wild ride and I can't recommend it enough! Some scenes have stuck with me.
#9: It, by Stephen King

I had never read this before but thought the TV and movie adaptations were interesting enough and the book is just so much more than what was put on screen. It's not without flaws but the amount of creativity in monster design and immersive settings was impressive!
#10: Penpal, by Dathan Auerbach

Apparently this story was converted from an online episodal horror project into a full-length novel. While that aspect of it shows in it sometimes being disjointed, it's a really interesting and atmospheric read.
To carryover a tradition that I used to have on the other site for #SpookySeason, I'm going to list my top 10 favorite scary stories that I've read so far this year:

Also revisiting King's short stories after The Dark Tower is a fun little exercise in detail picking
Tender is the Flesh is NOT for the squeamish

I’m sure JRR Tolkien sold a lot of books. But did he have a commemorative plaque on a bookstore toilet? I think not.
