2024 art summary, or: a year of Tallum 🌲

Sigurd Lewerentz and Gunnar Asplund, this one’s for you β€” your brilliant collaboration, biblical architecture, and doomed (b)romance

Hah understandable! Patiently waiting for 2028 when all the stuff comes back. Was a more intimate space than I imagined, even without anything, so curious to know what the functioning library experience will be like.
I humbly offer you a photo of the library on my magical first visit (earlier in spring), in which I saw it with no books, no shelves, nothing - just pure architecture, space and light:

Le Corbusier: let us return to the platonic volumes, cubes, cylinders, what have you

Asplund: [builds Stockholm Public Library]

Le Corbusier: not like that
So worth a visit. They do tours throughout the season, though if I recall correctly only in Swedish. I had the great pleasure and honour of graduating in the Royal Festival Hall a year ago. Wore my FOB pin to match; I hoped my architects were proud of me too! πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ“
Lights on, lights off! (Kind of think there’s tooo much lighting after dark..? Let me see the crystalline interior shine through and the fly tower dissolve into the night.)
Some other bits and bobs, I actually found it quite hard to photograph the foyer. The space is just so… massive? That I didn’t expect.
Feels like every week is a deadline week? 🫨 Anyways. Was very smitten with HelldΓ©n’s glass lights. Would recommend going! Classical works great in the auditorium even though I would’ve also liked to see bob hund there.
Binging operas again to get through this deadline week, so a throwback to spring when I went to my first in-person opera in Malmâ and saw La Bohème at the Lewerentz, Lallerstedt and Helldén opera house/ex-stadsteater (1944):

Piles of unused tickets for fantastic concerts that came up for auction three years ago. Apparently they were found in a closed-up space when the Free Trade Hall was transformed onto a hotel
Basildon New Town is sadly not named after Basil Spence who worked on it (😞) but I think this is a myth worth starting
🀩🀩 oh LOVE that! (Also I know exactly where that is because I’ve also stood at that spot taking photos… but of the building behind the tram in pic 2. πŸ˜‚)

Some Sthlm transport museum snaps below, they’re celebrating the 75th bday of the metro this year which is super cute:
Yes I did cry over the SU30 light sign in the transport museum, he looks beautiful from every angle πŸ˜πŸ•ŠοΈβ€οΈ
ooooh fab thank you, definitely going on the list. Having fallen in love with Stockholm’s transport museum I’m very keen on seeing some more. πŸ˜† I did Nasjonalmuseet last time in Oslo and thought that was super worth it. Also hope you saw the Saarinen near Victoria terrace!
πŸ“– Supplementary reading: a beautiful obituary that made me sob at my desk the first time I read it. tidskriften-arkitektur.blogspot.com/2010/09/beng...
omg wait I didn’t know Oslo also had a banging transport museum. Must go next time!
