Thanks for the link and the direction towards the last section. Was not aware of this one (hard to keep up lol). Looking forward to reading it soon.

Whoa! On the basis of this quotation, that sounds like a very interesting read. Looking up now. Thanks!

Here is a remarkable segment from the CBC's The Current featuring Fogo Island Inn founder and tech executive Zita Cobb. Cobb's energy, ingenuity, and deep commitment to her community are striking. Her model needs to be studied and selectively applied across Canada.

It's a good idea. TAPE kind of occupied that niche for a while but I don't know that anyone is doing it right now.

Retreats always sound so fun. As though they'll be held at waterside cottages or country estates and be full of spontaneous convos with interesting people. The reality is usually pretty much the opposite of idyllic, however lol.

This will be useful for my framing lecture lol

Option B sounds like it would be something to behold but I can't see how it would work in practice. With that many people, the options are a) sheet cake b) a number of smaller cakes (e. g. four smaller round cakes), IMO. In this case, A sounds great.

Thank you, Carl. The timing of this piece couldn't be better as I am working on something that has required me to revisit the poptimism/rockism wars.

Love it. Been on real Hold Steady kick lately and this took me for a ride on the ROFLcopter.

Whatever one thinks of the #CFL rule changes - I think they could be beneficial, FWIW - a new commissioner instituting them quickly without extensive consultation with all stakeholders set the whole thing up for failure.

People aren't even bowling alone anymore.

Congratulations, Robyn! I look forward to reading it when it materializes. Hope the writing process is fulfilling and relatively painless :)

Apart from the obvious issues with the core argument here, the argument that 'the tech is not going away so we should use it and get used to it" is so pernicious. It's as though the swiftness of AI's rise, coupled with the tech's awesome power, has disarmed our collective critical faculties.

Thanks! That quotation really spoke to me :) I need to read the book now.

Kostova really nails a certain side the typical North American grad school expertise, IMO; this sentence perfectly encapsulates the strange blend of feelings one experiences while learning to produce the sort of critique that works to sustain the very system it is ostensibly seeking to change.

I'm sorry, Alyx. This is the main thing I couldn't get used to in my time in the US. It's a terrible condition of precarity. The irony is that the care I enjoyed while in the US was excellent. But that doesn't make it easier to live with the fact that one's coverage could simply disappear.

I'm glad to see it. It's true that he didn't fully close the door but he also didn't maintain his line to any reasonable degree. I think it was a good decision.

I haven't read the article (paywall) but is the first problem here not a this not a category issue stemming from the persistent desire to consider everyone middle class? In most places in the US today, 50k-100k probably shouldn't be considered MC in my opinion.

Wonder if Viviani will be relegated for his deviation, which recalled his Giro 2019 move that resulted in a DQ. It's hard; he's clearly so desperate for another GT stage win and that appeared to result in a fair bit of lateral movement today.
