Here are the best books I read this year...

What are laws, really?

Don't remove the names of Confederates off off military bases because those names mean something and history is important. These names are, like, sacred, historic. They matter to people. Stop changing things. Also, the Donald Trump Kennedy Center, heck yeah, love that.

Totally honest question: what are Congressional hearings for?

I feel like all I see every day are congresspeople grilling someone at a table from a big high dais. But I can't think of a time anything happened next. Does anything happen next? Has anything ever happened next?

Wow, really meaningful to have my story included in this venerable list by Matt, who is as engaged a reader and writer and teacher in this funny little world of short fiction as anybody. Truly honored and grateful.
I've taken the reins for this month's #Mondettes - it's my end-of-year round-up of some of my favourites from 2025, also known as the MAFFIAS!!!

There are stories that come along from time to time that, once you've read them, have given you not only the pleasure of being entertained and affected, but cause you to feel you know the world more than before you read it. I think of "The Wife of His Youth" often. This wonderful story is another.
Long time since I released a big beast into the wild but here is The Future Is Me, told from NHS waiting rooms during the peak of the AIDS epidemic. The siblings are my most Northumbrian characters though a Colombian walked in from nowhere and kidnapped the story.

"The war has been *averted.*"

siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh...

(Stunning gravity as always from Jaime, one of my absolute favorites. Few writers say so much when they say so little. Read this.)
"The lights are dimming across Europe, the darkness seeping through the cracks of the British everyday."

SO thrilled my 1930s, very British, allegorical domestic drama - Appeasement - was a finalist for the New Flash Fiction Award by @nffr.bsky.social.

"Infinite Wisdom" isn't only a story I really love, it's my 2000-word exploration of my own personal near-future prophecy: The advent of what I call "Brainchip." It's near and dear to my goofy little heart. Give it a read, if you like, and tell me what you think!
So excited to have my story "Infinite Wisdom" published in the pages of this month's @elegantliterature.bsky.social, titled "Charmed and Chained." Check it out along with LOTS of great stories this month, here: www.elegantliterature.com/magazine/

We don't talk enough about what a jerk this guy is. I know we talk about it all the time I'm just saying we don't talk enough about it. Watch the last few seconds. What the heck man.
Reporter: Governor Walz called for the release of your MRI results

Trump: They were perfect like my phone call where I got impeached.

Reporter: Can you tell us what they were looking at?

Trump: I have no idea. It was just an MRI. It wasn’t the brain because I took a cognitive test and aced it.

The special prosecutor being questionably removed from the case and then the guy who took over not being able to find anybody to take the case and then just deciding to drop it feels like a different thing than "a judge dismissed the last Trump election interference case" but who am I to say?

This feels like a spiritual successor (or predecessor, in terms of age of the characters) to Hempel's In the Cemetery Where Al Jolson Is Buried. Beautiful storytelling here. Heart-stretching and full of guilt and sorrow and love. @splitlipthemag.bsky.social

Today we see the statue of David. His cock is unimpressive but his hands stop my breath. My best friend Amy wants me to sweet talk a museum attendant into letting us touch them.

Read my friend's perfect story. You will regret it but you also won't.
“You name each shape in sing-song, asking me to play along, but it’s the summer before seventh grade and I’m too old for make-believe.”

Read my contest-winning story, “Lee Aeronautics,” here:

On a lazy mayfly day, we sit on Grandpa Lee’s wrap-around porch, purple-tongued and sticky-fingered from the grape soda and teriyaki jerky he keeps in the pantry because they’re your favorites.&nbs…

Listening to @ryanhasaquestion.bsky.social drink wine on CPR and I'm just so happy for him. Dude is just living the absolute peak. I don't drink wine but I just love listening to him and this other nerd love their lives so fully.

I think the word thrum is only used by creative writers. I've never seen it in any other context.

I'm finally gonna say it. Ned Stark deserved to lose his head just for the way he said "they have no ships, Robert" at their fancy King picnic. There. I said it. I'm glad he's dead.

No freaking way. Octavia E Butler forecasting 2032 in 1998. Check the second to last line. This is nuts. Utterly eerie stuff.
