Nintendo taps Samsung to make Switch 2 chips in a move that could ramp up production
Nintendo has partnered with Samsung to make the main chips for Switch 2, a new report claims. According to Bloomberg, Nintendo has turned to Samsung to make the Nvidia-designed custom processor for the Switch 2 console, in an attempt to speed up production. The publication’s sources say the deal with Samsung means production should be fast enough to make and sell 20 million Switch 2 units by the end of March 2026, with the potential to ramp up even more if needed, depending on assembler capacity. Samsung already makes other components for Nintendo such as memory chips and displays, but has reportedly been struggling to compete with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) to make chips not just for Nintendo but for many of the world’s other electronic devices.

Neil Druckmann is working on a second unannounced game at Naughty Dog
The Last of Us director Neil Druckmann has revealed he’s involved in a second unannounced project at Naughty Dog, alongside his sci-fi game Intergalactic. Naughty Dog has historically struggled to work on multiple large games simultaneously, and following the cancellation of its The Last of Us online game 17 months ago, it was unclear whether it would be destined to continue focusing on a single main project, even though it insisted at the time it was planning multiple games. Now, speaking to the Press X to Continue podcast, Druckmann has reiterated that Naughty Dog is still working on at least two projects, and confirmed that he is producing an unannounced game alongside Intergalactic.

Nintendo’s latest Switch 2 video shows a close-up look at game cards, carry case
Nintendo has published another new Switch 2 video, this time showing a close-up look at the console’s official carry case and its game cards. As you can see in the Nintendo Today video, rehosted below, Switch game cards are remarkably similar to those of the original Switch, though colored red. Switch 2 is able to play physical Switch 1 games, so the similarity in size and form is perhaps unsurprising. The video focuses on Nintendo’s official Switch 2 carry case, and also offers a look at Switch 2’s Joy-Con wrist straps.

SAG-AFTRA challenges Epic Games over Darth Vader AI in Fortnite
SAG-AFTRA, the labour union for American actors, has criticised Epic’s addition of a Darth Vader AI chatbot in Fortnite, and accused the company of unfair labor practices. Fortnite added the Darth Vader chatbot with its latest season, which allows players to interact with the character, who will respond with the iconic voice of late actor James Earl Jones. Epic says Jones’s AI-powered voice was used with permission from his family. However, SAG-AFTRA argues that the tool still takes work away from other actors who could’ve voiced the character in his video game form.

Nintendo will be attending Gamescom 2025
Nintendo has announced that it will be taking part in Gamescom this year, following its decision to skip last year’s event. The company chose not to attend Gamescom in 2024. It was believed at the time that this was due to Nintendo focusing on the then-unannounced Nintendo Switch 2 system. Now, the publisher has confirmed it will return to the show, which takes place in Cologne, Germany, from August 20 until August 24. A post on Nintendo’s official German account on X reads: “Mark it in red on your calendar – Nintendo will be back at Gamescom in 2025.

Hideo Kojima reveals his next espionage game ‘Physint’ is 5-6 years away
Hideo Kojima has said that one of his next games, Physint, won’t be released for “five or six” years. Kojima recently spoke to French magazine Le Film Français, during which he was asked about the adaptation of the Death Stranding film, which is currently in production at A24, and if he’d like to work on more films in the future. When asked if he’d like to direct a film, Kojima replied, “Oh, yes! I received many offers after leaving Konami.” Kojima went on to explain that he has multiple video game projects in development, and that he may consider making a film once Death Stranding 2 and Physint are complete.

Yakuza 0 comparison video shows the Switch 2 and PS4 versions side-by-side
A new comparison video shows how the Switch 2 version of Yakuza 0 looks compared to the PS4 version. Sega recently posted a number of short videos to its YouTube channel highlighting the new English voice dub for the Switch 2 ‘Director’s Cut’ of the game. YouTube user Cycu1 has taken these clips and put them side-by-side with the corresponding moments in the PS4 version of the game, allowing for a direct comparison between the two. This video can be seen embedded at the top of this article. Because both versions are taken from online videos and weren’t both captured by the user with the same capture equipment, the comparison is subject to potential caveats (one version might be more compressed than the other, for example).

Injustice 3 could be in development, according to a MultiVersus dataminer
The development of a third game in the Injustice series is being teased by a MultiVersus dataminer. An account that had a history of posting information about MultiVersus content before it was officially revealed has teased that a new game in the Injustice franchise is in development. “Multiversus shutting down is an injustice, then doing it all again is another injustice,” reads the post on X from MultiverSusie. “Leaving me without any leaks is yet again another injustice,” they continued. MultiverSusie then followed up with a reply reading “3.” Both MultiVersus and Injustice are games publisher by Warner Bros Games, which may explain how MultiverSusie has seemingly been able to acquire data on the latter.

Final Fantasy 11 was going to shut down last year but fans have kept it alive, director says
The director of Final Fantasy 11 says the game was planned to end last year (and possibly shut down altogether) but fan support has kept it alive. Final Fantasy 11 was originally released on PS2 and PC in Japan in 2002, before coming to North America and Europe in the following years. In 2006 the game also received an Xbox 360 port. Servers for the Xbox 360 and PS2 versions ended in 2016, but the PC version remains playable to this day. In an interview with Dengeki Online (via Automaton) the game’s current director Yoji Fujito said that before the game’s 20th anniversary in 2022, Square Enix had already been preparing for potentially ending support for the PC version in 2024, after the game’s Voracious Resurgence storyline ended.

Pokémon Black Bolt and White Flare will reportedly face shortages as Pokémon ‘catches up’ with older sets
The next expansion to the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Pokémon Black Bolt and White Flare, will reportedly face shortages at launch as The Pokémon Company attempts to catch up on older sets. Interest in the Pokémon Trading Card Game has exploded since late last year. New sets, which are released every few months, are facing massive stock shortages worldwide, and exclusive items from these sets are being scalped (bought for the sole purpose of selling them above RRP) widely. The Pokémon Company has said that it is at maximum printing capacity as it attempts to meet demand, but it’s now been claimed that Pokémon’s next set, Pokémon Black Bolt and White Flare, will also face issues as The Pokémon Company tries to catch up.

Nintendo confirms Switch 2 will include much-requested accessibility feature
The Nintendo Switch 2 will support text-to-speech. The feature, which has been shown off in a new gameplay clip of the Nintendo Switch 2‘s Game Chat feature, shows players typing messages into the system, which are then read by the system itself. While currently unconfirmed, the original Nintendo Switch system supported USB keyboards, so it’s likely Nintendo Switch 2 will also support the accessory. The Nintendo Switch 2 will also support live captions, meaning that a chat box on the side of the screen during Game Chat sessions will transcribe what other players say into their Nintendo Switch 2 systems, adding a further layer of accessibility.

Shuhei Yoshida claims 2 fan favourite PS Vita games were getting sequels before the transition to PS4
Sequels to two fan-favourite PS Vita games were in development before the budget for both games was diverted to PlayStation 4 development. That’s according to former SIE president Shuhei Yoshida, who this week revealed that the sequels were in development, but ultimately scrapped as Sony transitioned from focusing on the cult-favourite handheld to putting its resources behind the PS4. Speaking on Sacred Symbols+, Yoshida said: “We were actually working on Soul Sacrifice 2 and Freedom Wars 2, but because of budget limitation we had to stop and move on to PS4.”

Here’s how Pokémon Scarlet & Violet’s visuals compare on Switch 2 vs. Switch 1
The first Switch vs Switch 2 screenshots for Pokémon Scarlet & Violet have been published, after fans compared areas shown in this week’s official media drop. According to Nintendo, Scarlet and Violet’s visuals have been “optimised for the Nintendo Switch 2 display and high-resolution TVs for improved image quality,” with an improved frame rate.

A year after release, Activision is winding down Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile
A little over a year after its release, Activision is pulling Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile from the App Store and Google Play Store, and ending support for the game. Released in March 2024, the iOS and Android game is co-developed by Activision’s Shanghai, Beenox, Digital Legends, and Solid State studios, and supports shared progression with the console and PC versions of Warzone. It’s Call of Duty’s second mobile game, after 2019’s Call of Duty Mobile, which is developed by TiMi Studio and continues to be supported. In a statement published on Friday, Activision said it has decided to end support for Warzone Mobile because it has “not met our expectations with mobile-first players like it has with PC and console audiences”.

Bungie pulls Marathon gameplay after art plagiarism storm, and say it’s reviewing all art
Bungie pulled all Marathon gameplay from its latest live stream on Friday, while it said it reviews and removes artwork that one of its former artists took without permission. Earlier this week, Scottish artist Fern ‘4nt1r34l’ Hook accused Bungie of taking assets from her previous work and using it in the alpha for Marathon. Bungie later acknowledged that Hook’s claims were accurate, and claimed that a former staff member was responsible for taking her art. On Friday, the developer kicked off its weekly Marathon live stream in sombre fashion, first announcing that it would not have any gameplay, due to the ongoing investigation into the lifted artwork.

Nintendo confirms previously expected Switch 2 feature won’t be available at launch
Despite initially announcing the feature, Nintendo has confirmed that Switch 2 will not support variable refresh rate (VRR) when played in docked television mode. VRR, in Nintendo’s words, helps games move seamlessly “by preventing frame skips and flickering”. Following Switch 2’s full reveal in April, Nintendo’s official websites had advertised VRR support for the console in both handheld and docked mode. However, some weeks later, it was noticed that references to VRR had been quietly removed in relation to docked play. Now, over a month later, Nintendo has finally clarified that Switch 2 will support VRR in handheld mode only – but not on TV.

Bungie confirms that an artist’s work was taken and used in Marathon without their permission
Bungie has acknowledged that an artist’s work was taken and used in its upcoming Marathon without their permission. Scottish artist Fern Hook, who posts as 4nt1r34l on social media, posted a series of messages on X on Thursday, accusing Bungie of taking assets from her previous work and using it in the newly released alpha for the game. “The Marathon alpha released recently and its environments are covered with assets lifted from poster designs I made in 2017,” Hook claimed, posting numerous comparison images. “Bungie is of course not obligated to hire me when making a game that draws overwhelmingly from the same design language I have refined for the last decade, but clearly my work was good enough to pillage for ideas and plaster all over their game without pay or attribution.”

Killer Instinct Gold becomes the 39th Nintendo 64 game to be added to Switch Online
Killer Instinct Gold is the latest game to be added to the Nintendo 64 collection on Nintendo Switch Online. Despite the name suggesting a special edition of the original game, Killer Instinct Gold is in fact a home port of arcade game Killer Instinct 2. Three characters from the original game (Chief Thunder, Riptor and Cinder) have been removed and replaced with three newcomers – teenage ninja Kim, Amazonian warrior Maya and musclebound warrior Tusk. The first game’s combo system is given more prominence here, while the combo breaker system has also been made easier for those on the receiving end.
