Welcome Vanessa Barry, Cure Cancer’s New CEO! 🎉

Her passion for social impact makes her the ideal leader to drive our mission forward—funding Australia’s brightest emerging researchers to prevent, detect & treat cancer. We’re excited for the future under her leadership. 🔬
💙 Read Natalie’s story and help spread the message: early detection and research save lives.

“If we don’t keep funding research, people like me won’t have options. We need better treatments, earlier detection, and more awareness.”

Her story is a powerful reminder to listen to your body, take screening seriously—and support research that can save lives.
Now, Natalie is courageously sharing her story to raise awareness and push for earlier detection and better outcomes. “Bowel cancer doesn’t discriminate,” she says. “It can happen to anyone.”

She knows firsthand that awareness alone isn’t enough—we need answers.
🌟 Natalie’s Story: Living with Bowel Cancer 🌟

At just 39, Natalie Phong was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer—despite having no symptoms, no family history, and feeling completely healthy. What started as mild abdominal pain turned into a life-changing diagnosis.
Supported by Cure Cancer funding, Prof Nikola Bowden has helped develop melanoma treatments that reached clinical trials—now, she’s determined to do the same for ovarian cancer.

Let’s support her work 💜 You can donate to research like hers here: www.curecancer.com.au/ovarian-cancer (3/3)
Donate to ovarian cancer research
Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, making it challenging to treat. In Australia alone, approximately 1,500 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, and tragically, aroun...

She’s using cutting-edge technology to fast-track potential new treatments—one of which is set to enter clinical trials this year! Inspired by a friend’s ovarian cancer journey, she’s dedicated her career to improving survival rates for women with this lethal disease. (2/3)

We’re incredibly proud of the achievements of brilliant Cure Cancer-funded researchers like @aruthak.bsky.social, who was recently awarded the NHMRC Science to Art Award for his digital image of a skin cancer.

Please join us in congratulating him & his team on this new research! 👏 (4/4)
By creating digital maps of ovarian tumours and analysing them computationally, @aruthak.bsky.social and the team are identifying patterns that can help predict which patients will respond to treatment — bringing us one step closer to personalised, life-saving care. 🧬 (3/4)
Their recent tissue-imaging research reveals how the tumour environment, metabolic activity,& immune cells influence patient survival. This groundbreaking work can pave the way for new therapies for one of the deadliest cancers affecting women and people with ovaries today. (2/4)
🎉New cutting-edge research on ovarian cancer 🎉
Ovarian cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, often detected too late & with few treatment options. But thanks to the work of The University of Queensland's A/Prof @aruthak.bsky.social, Naomi Berrell & their team, there’s new hope on the horizon (1/4)

Ovarian cancer is a silent killer. With no early detection test and limited treatment advances in decades, survival rates remain devastatingly low. Research is the key to changing this. (3/4)
10 years later, she’s a survivor, a mum, and a passionate advocate for ovarian cancer awareness. But the reality is heartbreaking: most diagnosed at the same time as her didn’t make it. (2/4)
💚 “I still have scars that will never go away.”

At just 31, Prof Francine Marques @fzmarques.bsky.social was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer—despite being so young and living a healthy lifestyle. (1/4)

Next month marks 10 years of my stage 3 #ovariancancer diagnosis 🙏

I recently had the honour to share my story with @curecancer.bsky.social, via the work my colleague and friend Dr @jessholien.bsky.social is leading in this area

🔬 Until recently, with the introduction of target therapies, ovarian cancer patients received treatment that has largely remained the same for many decades. Even after going into remission, cancer recurrence is common for survivors. (3/4)
👩‍🔬 Ovarian cancer is often called the silent killer because symptoms are vague and easily dismissed. Unfortunately, the 5-year survival rate for ovarian cancer is only 49% and many patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage, where their odds of survival are even lower. (2/4)
💚 This #WomensHistoryMonth, let's raise awareness of ovarian cancer, the deadliest cancer affecting women and people assigned female at birth in Australia. (1/4)
These researchers are pushing the boundaries of science, but they can’t do it alone. Your support fuels life-saving discoveries.
