People think the South is stupid and racist, but it's really no more stupid or racist (on a moving average) than anywhere else in the U.S. The difference is that the South has an inferiority complex that drives its political leaders absolutely insane

Given (apparent) moves by the gendarmerie/military and legislature, on a scale of no coup to coup, where does this fall right now?

The situation in #Madagascar is incredibly worrying, and I'm wishing all my friends and colleagues there the best during these uncertain times.

Hoping these monumental changes lead to a better future for all of the island's people

The land of Gunnison Sage-Grouse 🦃, which I didn't get to see 😠

Something about a bird being endangered makes them hard to find? Annoying.

Anyways, central CO is gorgeous. Here's Needle Rock, an ancient volcanic neck

Needle Rock, an ancient volcanic neck, protrudes from the Earth as it is illuminated by the sun in front of large mountains laying in shadow. A partly cloudy blue sky dominates the upper two-thirds of the photo, while low-lying hills covered in grass and sagebrush appear in the foreground.

It really is astonishing how many Americans' self-image of their country has clouded their ability to consider how other people might see it. Our lives are, by and large, measurably better compared to most of the world. Our privileges are immense, despite our flaws.

Telling people that an ecosystem is sensitive and to tread lightly, with a vague reference to climate change and no other mention of "liberal" topics, is enough for removal? Insane

The romanticized pastoral aesthetic here seemingly doesn't apply to black and brown people in the developing world, because romanticizing medieval pastoral aesthetics is inherently racist.

Anyone seriously looking to medieval European peasants for lessons about work-life balance in the year of our lord 2025 - instead of looking at anywhere else in the world right now - is betraying an ignorance about human society at a global scale.

Hundreds of millions of people around the world still live like this, by the way. The illustration in the thumbnail is functionally identical to households I've visited in rural Madagascar.

I see how looking to medieval life can be useful, but you don't need the past for these kinds of lessons.

You'd think this would make his claims and actions weaker. Are we really going to have to wait until the courts respond to whatever lawsuits are filed because of all this?

Hmmmm interesting. Certainly not common then

What is the precedent for this kind of move? How often do businesses like Nexstar/ABC do this? Examples in the past?

Trying to understand the severity of this kind of action.

And a lot more would probably just not make the jump bc of the inconvenience alone. Or out of spite for interrupting their scrolling.

Another app, maybe one not currently operating as a TikTok analog, could take its place. Musical.ly would be unrecognizable to most TikTok users today, after all

Part of the problem w/ this kind of nakedly partisan acquisition in our current culture war environment is that they're making it so that using the app under new mgmt is inherently participation in, even approval of, the politics of the new owners.

I think a lot of people would refuse to migrate.

If they have to switch apps, that'll kill it I think, at least for the people who aren't rightwing.

I live in Washington state, though, for what that's worth. And we'll see what happens when I actually sign up for an appointment in October

I just asked my doctor about this, and she said she wasn't aware of any doctor or pharmacy that would deny me a shot if I asked for one, even given all this. Very much a not-so-subtle "we will break rules to get people vaccinated if that becomes necessary" kind of statement.

There's a solemness to winter that often gives way to peace, or at least quiet. I'm feeling a bit mocked by today's bright, warm weather.

This old photo is resonating with me more.
