Without enforcement, the public, especially children, remains exposed to misleading marketing that downplays the real risks -- cancer, heart disease, and addiction. Graphic warnings slice through this deception, ensuring every consumer has clear, evidence-based information about the dangers.
Civil society advocate Cecilia Lubanga is calling on Kenya to close a dangerous enforcement gap in its tobacco control laws. While the country requires graphic health warnings on tobacco products, those rules are not always applied to newer nicotine products.
"Enforcement alone will never be enough. If we truly care about the future of our children and communities, we need to go further. It’s time to adopt an absolute ban on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship. No loopholes. No tarps. No painted walls."

The newly released 2023 Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) data shows:
✔️ Tobacco use is down from 7.9% in 2013 to 6.7% in 2023
✔️ Secondhand smoke exposure is decreasing at home, at work, and in restaurants
✔️ Tobacco advertising has been significantly curtailed
