His legacy isn't just optics — it's the mindset that knowledge must be tested, not merely believed. Ibn al-Haytham helped turn philosophy into what we now call science. #scientificmethod #historyfacts
After al-Hakim's death, Ibn al-Haytham was freed. His writings spread across the Islamic world, then into Europe, influencing thinkers from Roger Bacon to Kepler and beyond.
He built the first camera obscura, designed controlled experiments, and argued that every theory must be tested through repeatable observation, a radical idea in the 11th century.
His seven-volume Book of Optics overturned centuries of accepted wisdom. He showed that vision occurs when light enters the eye, not when rays shoot out from it, as the Greeks claimed.
Under house arrest for a decade, Ibn al-Haytham turned confinement into creation. His home became a place of relentless observation, measurement, and experiment, a prototype of the modern lab.
When he saw the Nile's true power, he realized his plan couldn't work. Knowing al-Hakim's reputation for violence, he pretended to lose his mind, the only way to avoid execution.
Ibn al-Haytham was summoned by Egypt's Caliph al-Hakim to solve an impossible problem: control the Nile's annual floods. He proposed a massive engineering project to tame the river.

His first act? Refusing to execute senators condemned by Hadrian. Antoninus Pius declared: 'I will not begin my reign with bloodshed.' He pardoned them all, securing Senate loyalty. #romanempire
