It's #Stunday so here's a stunning aberration I found in our newly-planted prairie: Black-Eyed Susan with a stigma that looks like a wooly caterpillar!

Nature is amazing

#NativePlants
Close-up of yellow-petaled flowers with a large brown stigma in the center. The stigma is unusually elongated so it forms an arch, effectively bending the entire flower. Another view of the flower, from the top. The stigma looks a bit like a fuzzy caterpillar.

Not just introducing but perpetuating previously-undetected risks on a much larger scale

Excellent point

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

Next Saturday is #NoKings Day.

Stand up for democracy before it's too late.

Find a protest near you at nokings.org.

In a similar vein, I had to explain what "Kristi Noem lips" were to my grandson this week, on a video call just after I'd been stung by a bee while harvesting apples. That led to a discussion of the very GOP phenomenon of altering your appearance to please dictators. (If you're a woman.)

Misty celebrating the Harvest Festival of Squash this #Caturday morning
A long-haired grey cat sits on the floor next to a cardboard box filled with a variety of squash (acorn, butternut, marrow). She seems slightly bemused yet bored at the same time. Pretty typical cat expression, actually.

For #MothFaceFriday, get a load of this Corn Earworm Moth -- the arched antennae, the thick proboscis, the bulging green eyes ...

Taken last weekend in my garden

Moths are amazing

Close-up of the face of a light brown moth getting nectar from a pink and white flower. He has large green eyes and a reddish-brown antennae, and a coiled proboscis that matches the colour of his antennae is extending from his mouth. He knows what he needs and he's gonna get it!

Thank you. It's the same here in Wisconsin but I am not seeing any moths! How come you folks are so lucky?! Seriously, enjoying all the posts.

Saw the two of you on PBS Newshour earlier this week. Have to say, you are an impressive double act for getting simple explanations of complex dynamics across.

Approximately how cold is it getting there?

Common Checkered-skipper getting every last drop today, after a night of frost

Close-up of small black and white skipper (similar to a butterfly) sipping nectar from a pink and white flower head (Dutch Clover). We see his black proboscis extending into the flower, and his black, hooked antennae -- hallmarks of a skipper -- extending sideways from his tiny head. His black eyes seem to stare at us. In the background we see green meadow.

This is quite good. Are we sure this is actually Schumer??

The government is shut down because Trump and the Republicans are hellbent on taking health care away from you.

And they won’t even come to the table to talk to us about it.

This is not about politics. It's about people.

Let’s break it down:

Lies and fabrications.

One should assume, if one had not already, that every single thing the GOP has to say about pretty much anything is a lie or fabrication.

“.. On closer inspection, however, it turned out that the image was not a photograph of a real event in Portland, but instead a fabrication created by combining two photographs of scenes that unfolded in South America nearly a decade apart ..”

I nearly forgot a #MothMonday post!

Here's one of my favourites from the weekend -- I love the striped underwings contrasting with the intricate pattern on his upper wings

Close-up of a drab-coloured moth getting nectar from a white and pink flower. His striped underwings are a stunning visual contrast with the lace-like pattern of his upper wings.

Can't resist another #Stunday post -- from two days ago, Common Checkered-skipper on Dutch Clover

Love the way the delicate patterns on his underside reflect those within the flower

Humble skipper + humble flower = Ineffable beauty

#Lepidoptera
#Naturephotography
Close-up of a small skipper (type of lepidoptera), wings up, on the head of common clover. His upper side is simply black and white, as we can glimpse here, but his underside is more complex, featuring a spectrum of taupe, dark brown, and ivory markings. The delicate patterns and colours are similar to those inside the flower's head. The flower is edged in pink, which sets it off beautifully against the green grass in the background.
