I made a multi-part piece for #artober xD.

I. Hua Shijian (花世間 / 花世间, "flower of the mortal world“).

One of Thread's executives, he is said to be unmatched in combat. Acts as a proxy for Jade Scorpion.

Full color illustration from my Out of Memory comic. It depicts the character "Yaoshe Baiqiao" (aka. "Yao") sitting leisurely in a traditional Chinese-style room. He is an elegant man who appears to be in his late twenties or early thirties, with long, curly medium purple hair that extends past his shoulders. He is wearing an elaborate outfit that resembles traditional Chinese hanfu and is holding a pipe that is shaped like a serpent's head in his right hand. A large wisp of smoke can be seen emanating from the mouth of the pipe. Series cover for my Out of Memory webcomic. It features Kurosawa Makoto (黒澤 誠, "sincere black marsh") / Zhen Xinyi (真 心意, multiple meanings), one of the main protagonists in Out of Memory, facing off against one of the main antagonists, Baiqiao Yaoshe (白橋 妖蛇, “demonic snake of the white bridge”). A warrior with reality-warping powers, Xinyi is a pacifist who sees violence as a last resort. Yao, on the other hand, is a charming and manipulative prince who can be ruthless towards his enemies. Xinyi and Yao have a complex relationship that departs from the standard hero - villain dynamic. Cover for Out of Memory - Chapter 5. It features Makoto Kurosawa (real name: Zhen Xinyi) sitting in a well-lit deck with Chinese-style windows, enjoying afternoon tea and snacks. The deck is several stories above ground, as the sky and the upper branches of a tree are all that’s visible through the open windows. In one of the panels, crows are shown flying in the sky.

Makoto is sitting at a wooden table. Both the table and the bench he’s sitting on have matching hand-carved decorations. He’s holding a teacup in his gloved right hand, and his left hand is partially hidden by the objects on the table. On top of the table is teapot and a plate of what seems to resemble real-life rice balls. His long bangs are covering his eyes, hiding most of his expression.

Makoto is wearing a fantasy version of traditional East Asian attire. Even if his outfit were drawn in full color, it would all be different shades of black and white. The collar of his outfit covers most of his neck and ends just below his chin. His long, white cape starts at the base of the collar and extends almost all the way to the ground. Since Makoto is sitting, a good portion of the cape is tucked away and to the side.

Dialog:
???: Makoto. Heap is in imminent danger of being overrun.
Makoto: I see. Character profile / illustration from my Out of Memory comic. It features several major characters, paired with their enemy and/or rival.

The top row feature “Makoto Kurosawa” / Zhen Xinyi and “Yaoshe Baiqiao.”

Makoto is a man who appears to be in his twenties. He has blue hair and light blue-purple eyes, and is wearing a black sleeveless top with a hood. He is smiling and appears to be beckoning the viewer. A crow is sitting on his left shoulder, giving the audience a side-eye.

“Yao” is a pale man who appears to be the same age as Makoto. He has wavy purple hair and pink eyes with white pupils. He is wearing a dark red outfit that resembles a Chinese hanfu, and is wearing gold claws on his right hand. A large, purple serpent is shown behind him.

The second row features "Gyoku Kurosawa" / Jade Scorpion and a villain whose name hasn’t been revealed.

Gyoku is a dark-skinned man with wavy white hair and jade-green eyes with a ring around each pupil. He is wearing a black sleeveless top with gold trim and fancy shoulder-length gloves. Pinned to his cloak is a fancy, green and gold brooch that resembles a scorpion. He is looking to the side and appears downcast.

The villain is a light-skinned man with black, pupil-less eyes and crimson hair tied in a ponytail. He's wearing a white blazer with gold trim and black faux fur. He is looking over his shoulder towards Gyoku (off-screen) and sports an ominous grin.

The third row features Aisling Jespersen and Alba Ardiente, the main characters of the Heap Arc.

Aisling is a young woman with short, wavy white hair and pink, pupil-less eyes. She is wearing a dark red winter outfit with a white cape, and is angrily glaring at Alba. She has her right hand on his shoulder.

Alba Ardiente is a dark-skinned young man with brown wavy hair tied in a low side ponytail. He has orange eyes with white, flame-shaped pupils. He is wearing a white, gold-trimmed coat with a cape. Alba is looking back at Aisling and is smiling slyly.

There's extremes in every direction, some people think the AI can do everything under the sun while others think it is completely incompetent. The problem is, too many believe the former or at least they refuse to push back on it. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

That's a big part of the issue, everyone wants experts but you need experience to be one. If they want quality then there is a bill to foot...

Can't blow up the pipe then ask why you aren't getting water 😅

Thing is while the masters aren't getting replaced, a lot of the work that would have normally gone to a junior or mid-level developer can be done by a senior using AI 😅. It doesn't have to be perfect to be considered good enough, because the master can spot/correct the mistakes.
craftsbyblue.bsky.social
It's an arms race at this point IMO. I get why businesses are trying to go all in on AI. In the hands of an experienced developer, it is a massive time saver. I just hope there will still be room for people who aren't geniuses who started coding at the age of four in a few years 😂.

XIV: Haijing (海鏡 / 海镜, "sea mirror").

Her design is not a spoiler but her role in the story is, so I'm not going to say much more.

P.S. Bonus points if you spotted her cameo ;).

Same, I bought a few comics to study from & I'm pretty much improving and tweaking as I go. I don't have time to take classes & mentors are not just hard to find, probably have to pay for them.

I also have to prioritize my "main" field, at least until AI makes most software engineers redundant 😂.
craftsbyblue.bsky.social
Most tutorials/classes don't teach beyond the basics, IMO the advanced techniques come through experience. I've found that to be the case for both art and software engineering. There's no real substitute to doing it yourself and ideally having an experimented mentor provide individualized feedback.
craftsbyblue.bsky.social
You are welcome! I think the lighting / shading was a great decision for this scene ;).

The carvings really look like a lot of dedication went into them. Don't strain your arm too much though - you need it well-rested for the long run! 😅
craftsbyblue.bsky.social
I'm guessing the mystery / supernatural forces at play may lead him to consider it...or not 😁.

Looking forward to him meeting / interacting with them xD.
craftsbyblue.bsky.social
Yup! Most tutorials / classes don't help because they're "copy this" or "draw this thing in this specific way." The most important skill is understanding how the subject actually works so you can draw them in different angles / lighting conditions / variations - that part is very difficult.
craftsbyblue.bsky.social
I know right? If social mobility / retiring comfortably is out of reach for most, the system isn't functioning. For all their flaws Gyoku & Yao have standards (but I also have politician characters who don't...) 😅.

Indeed it could! There's also his brother who his father keeps comparing him to 😅.
craftsbyblue.bsky.social
Thank you again~ it doesn't help that most of my characters look around the same age (20-30 years old) 😂. Though there is a in-universe reason for them looking young, and there are exceptions xD.

Your characters look unique, I don't think you suffer from same face syndrome ;).
craftsbyblue.bsky.social
Indeed it is & yeah, the flow is hard xD. I've noticed that a lot of manga fights I've read don't put much emphasis on the background, unless it's to emphasize the stakes or scale of an attack. When the pace slows down, there's more emphasis on the surroundings.
craftsbyblue.bsky.social
Thanks 💜
It's fun to think about these kinds of what-ifs xD.

A genius engineer who's often paired with Aris, Sanna is a mild-mannered and socially awkward pacifist. Her tech is often mistaken for magic.

Oh yeah I'm not looking to crash and burn even harder than I am right now xD.

That's one hard part about comics. With illustrations you don't typically have to draw unconventional perspectives / extensive backgrounds, but without that it's hard to keep a comic visually interesting.
craftsbyblue.bsky.social
Nah I'm definitely not trying to do a page a day, that's only possible if the entire page is a wall of text 😂

As soon as there's a background even a week may not be enough, color blows up the complexity as well xD.
craftsbyblue.bsky.social
Don't beat yourself up about it~ my comic pages are *supposed* to take one day each, yet I average a week each due to a combination of busy schedule, no energy, and burnout LOL 😅. Go at the pace you feel comfortable~
