Pierre Poilievre says he wants to “restore merit.” He needed to be handed arguably the safest, most impossible to lose conservative seat in all of Canada after losing his own seat.

Seems like the opposite of merit. #Poilievre

(oh, and he still refuses to complete a check for a security clearance)

I laughed at the question! Of course you had your friends' numbers memorized...you dialed them frequently so your fingers just knew!

Happy Thanksgiving! Grateful that we came to Canada 45 years ago. Grateful for my family and friends. Grateful that, at 80, I can still play tennis 1-3 times a week and am, mostly, healthy. Grateful for the historians of Bluesky who help make sense of our senseless times.

Many years ago, I made a Christmas ornament using this technique in a quilting class. Have been thinking if doing some again as coasters.

I was lucky to attend a girl's Catholic school where the nuns also believed that questioning was encouraged...like the Jesuits. I am sorry you had that experience but expect is was not uncommon and is probably more common nowadays.

@NYTimes This is the kind of #Wordle I just hate…too many options so it is just a guess. Guessed wrong today. Bummer.

There is one reason and one reason only that Trump was elected and that is misogyny. Harris is a highly educated woman of colour. The young men, black men and Hispanic men who either chose not to vote or voted for Trump just could not bring themselves to vote for a woman.

Re US election post-mortems blaming Biden for not dropping out of the election sooner because it only gave Harris a "short time" (107 days) until the election. May I point out that, in Canada, Trudeau announced his resignation, a leadership convention was held, and Carney was elected in 111 days.

Just noticed and corrected. Was messaging my SIL at the same time.

Knowing HOW government works and one's rights and responsibilities should not be controversial. As a landed immigrant to Canada wanting to become a citizen, I needed to learn this (as immigrants to the US who want to become citizens do as well). Surely native born citizens should too.

A more recent policy paper on this, from the Sandra Day O'Connor Institute also explains this. Like many other things, my generation threw out the baby with the bathwater in the name of reform!

I do wonder, though, how many Americans even know much about this anymore. I think civics classes died in the 1970's in both the US and Canada.

A good explanation. All of this is, of course, subject to the US Constitution and amendments, which have been under attack by the far right in the US for years. And Trump has a majority on the Supreme Court. I studied US Constitutional Law many years ago and am boggled by the disregard for precedent
cpswoveland.bsky.social
Polite way of saying what we all know...that Trump does not see himself limited by any agreement (not the US Constitution and its amendments; not the laws of the US; and certainly not any agreement with other nations or international bodies. There is no real negotiation with a person with dementia

David Eby fires back at Danielle Smith's 'un-Canadian' comments: "We all deserve the same opportunity for the same federal funding for our projects as she does for hers. That's not un-Canadian. That is fair. And there is nothing more Canadian than fairness. That is a core national value."

According to a survey, "If its annual operating losses were to be permanently subsidized by taxpayers, it would cost approximately $20 per Canadian citizen, according to a 2025 Angus Reid Institute survey." If this is the case, I would be happy to pay the $40 to keep our home delivery!

Can we please change the narrative? Canada Post is a SERVICE. You don’t expect a service to run at a profit. Where’s the profit at the fire department , the police department, child protection or education? This is like trying to equate Gov’t budgets with a credit card. Absolutely absurd!
