True yes - we have usee the sky as entertainment for centuries past - every constellation tells a story if you care to read it. However today’s age want sound and motion… celestial fireworks with (probably) adverts 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️
I’m hoping for better nights to get a scope on it over here…
Showed folks #comet #C/2025A6Lemmon through my 80x20 binos tonight (iphone eyepiece pic added) but some seemed more excited to see a string of satellites passing overhead. I do fear for our skies -a canvas for drive-thru entertainment and a “fast food” spectacle seems to be its future 😩 #astronomy 🔭
This year's 60 min attempt at #Elephant'sTrunkNebula #IC1396 #LDN1105 #EAA #astro #astrophotography looks more like a wholly mammoth?! 🔭
Whoops! Ghost Nebula details should read 60sx35 frames not 60sx345 frames but you all knew that right?!
Informative talk👇 -human spaceflight as a (US) civil religion vs science. However most tech advances claimed for human spaceflight -such as (yes) semiconductors, computing, and materials science -were primarily driven by defence, industrial, and satellite programs, not crewed missions. #spacepolicy
I really enjoyed talking to Nayeema Raza on her podcast, "Smart Girl, Dumb Questions". We discussed the civil religion of spaceflight, my "conversion" to space advocacy, and the current cuts facing NASA.

Some spooky spectral treats on the run-up to #Halloween... As usual just quick total exposures - #WizardNebula (see a hint at the end) #GhostNebula (a bit more obvious?) and #Mirach'sGhost - an elliptical caught in the glare of Mirach #astronomy #EAA #astro #astrophotography #halloween woooo!!!
And they still didn’t find anyone able to coherently offer a reason to go there except Autry and his usual “we just gotta beat China” shtick.🤦🏻‍♂️

Even better Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton 🙈☺️
But… but… but i’ve just bought my “Aliens are coming” protection armour from the Internet? They assured me the world’s leading scientist had confirmed “they” are coming … 😱😜

Great shot. Personally i have not had that much success with winjupos making an appreciable difference for the effort!
It happens everywhere because no one values software delivered content. Same in music etc.
I guess my point is that misogyny was rife in physics across UK departments, i’m just not so sure it was at the Nobel selection team vs what they had on the table? I see cock-up vs conspiracy…
I did not say Bell-Burnell was absent from Physics, only that Bohr continued to develop and extend his Nobel area research to high levels as time progressed so that might have been a contributing factor in his award. I cannot comment on what contribution Bell-Burnell was then (not) allowed to make.
Yes but in his case he was co-creator of a key validation with a similar young researcher. The Nobel people may have concluded the relationship was not the same across the Pulsar team? It probably helped that Bohr went on to take his work further over the years preceding the award announcement?
I understood it was common policy at the time to award to the team leaders who planned, designed and interpreted the research that led to discoveries. Indeed i believe other junior male researchers were also ignored over the years? Nobel changed that policy in the 80’s?
The belief that return to the Moon would just happen with the “right strategy” is false. Space journalists never asked why return? and at what cost? There is no clear case outside TV fantasies. If China had not decided to have a crack, this debate would be over for Govts. Private sector or nothing.
@pomarede.bsky.social i must express my admiration for your efforts here. Your team videos of the Laniakea region are a joy to explore, as is the music!
Well it's done. 3 talks delivered on the past, present and future of our Galaxy. A privilege to have the retirement time to research and present them to audiences that enjoy the subject matter.
But my Marvin jokes could do with some improvement! #u3a #astronomy #space #scifi
Even more surprising is that they can’t even be arsed to mention the key UK scientists involved on the mission who built one of the imagers and the team developing key data algorithms, all funded by UK tax payers. But that’s regional journalism for you. Fine as a local article but not a national.
Yeah but the way this is all working out you will be on your own! Apart from Marvin of course.
As the Honorary auditor of @royalastrosoc.bsky.social for next year i could always ask how the Society might be addressing this challenge?
And i assume no follow up about why?
I would imagine the usual “low ball” questions and follow ups from the moderator…
