Swearing in isn’t some ceremony. You aren’t a member of Congress until it happens. He knows that.

No phones, no staff, nothing.

I had to escort her into the Capitol on Wed bc Capitol police must treat her as a public visitor until she’s sworn in. And solo visitors aren’t allowed during shutdown!
Johnson: "Grijalva should be working for her constituents right now. I don't know what she's doing. I keep seeing their political stunt videos. She should be in her office. She should be working or in the district for her constituents" (Grijalva is not in fact a Rep. b/c Johnson refuses to seat her)
She calls on nurses to collaborate across sectors, participate in policy discussions, & ensure that the voices of vulnerable patients are represented in shaping the nation’s healthcare future. End 🧵
Kennedy emphasizes that despite uncertainty, Medicaid remains a crucial driver of community health & economic stability.
While the law includes a $50 billion rural hospital fund, its limited distribution offers little relief for struggling facilities. Some states may reduce provider reimbursements, affecting nurses & clinics directly.
Kennedy highlights key resources—RNAction.org for ANA advocacy updates, KFF Health News for policy analysis, & county-level Medicaid coverage maps—to support informed engagement.
ANA constituent & state nurses associations are mobilizing advocacy plans, even as most legislatures are out of session. Implementation begins in 2027, but states must begin preparing in 2026 to address the anticipated financial & human impact.
Nurses are urged to help patients understand the changes—especially since many are unaware they have Medicaid coverage due to state-specific program names, such as Oregon’s “Oregon Health Plan.”
The cuts will vary by state depending on local Medicaid structures & whether states expanded coverage under the ACA. States will now face complex challenges in funding & administering programs, while millions of individuals may need to meet stricter eligibility & work requirements.
The law reduces federal Medicaid spending by an estimated $911 billion over 10yrs, potentially leaving 10 million more Americans without coverage. Kennedy calls the legislation “a devastating blow” to millions who rely on Medicaid & urges nurses to take a leading role in advocacy & public education.
“Dramatic Medicaid Cuts Demand Robust Advocacy” (American Nurse Journal, Oct ‘25)

In her Oct 2025 American Nurse Journal column, ANA President Jennifer Mensik Kennedy addresses the sweeping effects of H.R.1, signed into law by Trump on July 4, 2025. 🧵

“The Shadow of Death with the Long Chest” is a rad name.
Quinn is looking dapper in his Halloween bowtie. 🖤☠️

A grey tabby cat is lying on a brown fuzzy blanket. The cat is wearing a black bow tie patterned with a little white skull and crossbones.
I'm starting to see fewer birds at the feeder, but this little finch really caught the eye today. 🪶

I loved Calvin and Hobbes and got them for my first grader. He had to take a break from reading them for a while after he hatched a very Calvinesque failed escape from school. His first-grade teacher was highly amused.
I felt so guilty that the poor woodpecker had to yell at me that I brought home a new feeder and a mega woodpecker cylinder. I hope this makes up for the morning of discomfort. 😁
Jumbo cylinder feeder with a bright red rain cover hanging from a juniper tree.
The suet feeder is empty, and the cylinder feeder is getting short and harder to perch on, so this woodpecker was telling me about it this morning while I made coffee.

I guess I’ll be stopping at the bird store this evening while driving the kids around to all their things. 🪶

Whoa‼️ Dems could lose 19 seats due to GOP gerrymandering.

CA, UT & MD can’t fight fire with fire alone. Other blue states must step up, and every Democrat needs to vote. Don’t sit out any election.

Push your governors and legislators to act. Tell friends and family to vote. Help them. #YesOnProp50
I couldn't decide what to get next. I'll check out The Sundial. Thanks for the recommendation!
We listened to the audiobook on a road trip, and both the teenagers and my husband and I loved it. Such a great fairy tale ❤️
Hey fellow Californians, remember to vote yes on 50 🗳️!

Don't sit this one out.
A blue round I voted sticker with the American flag on the top 1/3 of the circle reads “I voted” and “ Yo Voté.” Behind the sticker is part of a blue mail-in ballot envelope.
Gross. Unions help protect patient safety, staffing ratios, and living wages. ✊
‘Tis the season were the indoor/outdoor cat begrudgingly starts spending more time indoors. She was VERY happy to see the warm blanket come out today. She is a spicy kitty though so pet with caution.

A calico cat with an orange flame over her eye and white nose lays on a brown faux fur blanket.
Eldest teenager was recently asking why all his requests on Libby come in at the same time 😂.
“I don’t know kid, it’s just one of the universal truths.”

Next up from my fall TBR: The Butcher of the Forest by Premee Mohamed.

I absolutely loved We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. The story wasn't what I expected, & had me questioning what was really happening. I wish I’d read it on a rainy day off so I could finish it in one sitting.
I’m looking forward to reading more of her work.
