I think it’s because he doesn’t really fall into the western beauty standards of what is widely considered ‘conventionally attractive’ though a real walk through history will show that all features were considered beautiful or ethereal by one culture or another.

He does get Silco back of course. At first it just seemed as though Vander was being nice, periodically bringing Silco another fresh glass of water during the day to 'ward off any future headaches'.
