But the shareholders already made their money (an overwhelming amount of the profits go to them) and Cox will get a parachute out. They don't lose by the company going under, and if in five years Hasbro got bought by private equity it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Sure, bad or fudged data could cause a company to decline, but so many companies are entirely focused on short-term profits that I don't think this matters. If Hasbro went under because Universes Beyond pops, that's bad for Rosewater and Verhey and the entire R and D team...

I know that the reality of the situation is that information basically never becomes public in any way, but I don't think the average research company becomes big by necessarily providing 100% accurate data, much in the same way journalists don't need to provide 100% accurate reporting.

It's obviously not super important but if it comes out from some unspecified leak or something that the research company was fudging data it would negatively surprise me.

There have been enough cases of research companies either completely flubbing the data and making a mess of it or deliberately doctoring results to give what will be most pleasing to a company that I think there is reason to want some transparency on that front.

I do wonder sometimes what the research company that Wizards uses actually is. It continually gets brought up as a way of legitimizing the data but I've never actually seen it named and that means there's no way to actually verify the efficacy or legitimacy of the data in question.
