Three different instars of Nezara viridula nymphs spotted in a west London garden, early this week - and it seems the adults look quite different again!

A cluster of small, round, brown-black bugs on a large green flower bud on a shrub - with small white and orange dots, and one waving long, segmented black antennae around.

Two much larger bugs on another green flower bud - vaguely resembling ladybirds in their general, near-hemispherical shape - black with white and yellow spots in lines along their segmented abdomens.

Sneaking into #monochromemonday with another #infrared shot - overlooking the #grandcanyon, #arizona. July 2013.

(Strictly speaking, it's *not* quite monochrome - there's some complex interplay with longer / shorter wavelength near-infrared and the bayer mask on the sensor. Ahem.)

Alien, monochromatic landscape of pale, heavily eroded scarps and valleys, revealing intense horizontal, sedimentary layers - tufted with small, pale dots of vegetation. Pale outcrop of rocks in the foreground, receding to a vast, open canyon in semi-darkness in the background.

Visiting family. A fly landed in my beer... On closer inspection after being rescued, a tiny ichneumon wasp!

(Why do wasps, suddenly appear - every time, I am near, etc. I'd just been telling them the Good News about parasitoid wasps...)

$Slender, narrow-waisted black wasp with iridescent green-black eyes, orange legs and wings mostly folded, seen side-on, perching on a human fingertip - revealing features like legs to be a fraction of the width of a fingerprint ridge.$ Same wasp doing a near-handstand - cleaning itself off after landing in a glass of beer. It was released into the outdoors soon afterwards. (Yes, I did have a dSLR with macro lens and extension tubes to hand - which I unpacked from my bag with a tiny, damp wasp perched on a finger...)

In case #spidersaturday is also a thing - a rather cuddly Nursery Web Spider, Pisaura mirabilis. Not sure *what* it was doing with its front legs. Indicating that it wanted a hug? Aww.

Grey-brown mottled spider, with a white stripe along the back of its head and abdomen - on each side, first and second legs held close together, on a green bamboo leaf. Little beady black eyes peer out from underneath hairs - and the sides of the head have pale, mutton-chop like downward tufts.

Same spider again, only this time the front three legs on one side are bunched together and drawn towards the mouth.

Same spider - with front legs on both sides folded together in front, like a human folding (too many) arms.

These are with all 37mm of newly-acquired extension tubes. Minimum focus distance is quite a lot closer - but *maximum* focus distance is 30cm or so. Which, alas, meant I missed some dramatic dragonfly behaviours...

It seemed end-of-season for many bugs - then yesterday was warm and sunny. Cue ... bugs!

Close-up view of a dragonfly, from above and off to one side. The four, many-faceted transparent wings glitter in the early autumn sunshine - and are attached via knobbly structures to the thorax - which, like the long abdomen, is covered in yellow, blue and black patterns. The bulbous eyes reveal complex shapes from various optical effects from the multitude of closely-packed lenses.

Large cranefly on a green bamboo leaf - its narrow, greyish, muscular-looking body with a small head, long narrow wings and long, slender legs - giving it its common name of 'daddy long-legs'. (It's not the spider or a harvestman...)

Slender fly on a reddening autumn leaf in the sun - thorax an iridescent, metallic green, folded wings many-faceted and glittering.

Near-hemispherical ladybird - glossy red wing cases with black spots - on a dried, dying autumn leaf.

For #throwbackThursday - some #streetphotography from #Brussels, 2006-2008.

(I feel very self-conscious when pointing a camera at people - hence my tendency towards a more detached, humans-absent style of photography. But with these shots approaching 20 years old, I feel better about sharing...)

Large, grey cobbled square seen from above - a colourful ice cream van at the top, and small groups of people either waddling towards the van for ice cream or idly, grumpily discussing whether they should indeed head towards the van.

A street scene with two men with matching greying moustaches and hats, one playing a shiny accordion while another, bending his knees, bashing away at an ornate tray of what looks like miscellaneous kitchen equipment. A passer-by looks on, scowling somewhat.

Street music - a band with a singer with red hair, holding a microphone and a guitarist with long hair standing in front of a stack of Marshall amplifiers and speakers (and crates of bottles of beer), with a small girl wandering in to enjoy the (very loud!) music.

Big wasp / little wasp from today - Vespa crabro (male, based on number of segments in the antennae?) and an unidentifiable tiny one seen ambling across the wall next to my computer, illuminated by a desk lamp. Just a few millimetres long...

High contrast infrared shot. Looking up at a steep slope of scree and glowing white sagebrush at a near-vertical cliff of columnar basalt, with intense, narrow vertical striations revealing how a vast cooling flow of lava shrank and split into polygonal blocks - beneath a black sky.

A black-and-white, grainy photograph of a tall and old telecommunications tower out in the woods. The tower is a simple concrete pillar rising against the clear sky, with seven circular ‘balcony’ levels serving as floors for various drum-shaped link antennas pointing in every direction. In front of the tower sits a much lower outlook tower for passers-by, since the hilltop location is a decent vantage point after all. A mix of pines and naked broad-leaf trees frame the scene.

Stark, near-brutalist concrete road bridge - gigantic, simple semicircular arches of smooth, bare grey concrete interrupting vertical, thin rectangular columns - crossing a narrow, near-desert valley with dry grass, sagebrush and exposed rocks.
