Compostable is Not Always Compostable- Why “Compostable” Insulation Shouldn’t Go In the Pulp Vat

Compostable is Not Always Compostable- Why “Compostable” Insulation Shouldn’t Go In the Pulp Vat
Years and years ago I dumped the soft denim based insulation from a meal delivery service into my home compost. The company bragged that it was compostable. It was but not in a home compost bin. My compost bin didn't get to the kind of heat it needed to break down the bio plastics added to the fluff. It only partially broke it down.

Vacuum Sealers

Over the years we've had a few different vacuum sealers. We were initially gifted an "As Seen On TV" one from my MIL who had bought one off QVC or somewhere else in the 90s. It worked okay but struggled to suck and seal anything but the thinnest bags. We didn't like it. Then my…

Some claim the Clapperclaw comes from villagers forced from their homes by the clearances of medieval sheep barons or landowners wanting stately parks. A summoning of an old carrion god to bring a vengeance on greed. In this, a remembrance of folklore as ache for justice. – Dr. M. Benn #Folklore

Bone Broth

When we buy an easy chicken (what we call a rotisserie chicken) we save the carcass. That goes into the crock pot or stock pot with carrots, celery, and onion and a little salt. All rough chopped. If I have herbs I'll add them. But generally I leave this stock pretty plain and add…

If I have herbs I'll add them. But generally I leave this stock pretty plain and add seasoning later. The whole thing is covered in plenty of water.

Meal Planning and Costco

My wife and I used to have a Costco membership, it was gifted to her from a family member. We let it run out because Costco was a pain in the rear to get to. We just never went. And at the time we didn't have the chest freezer. My parents years ago insisted we all go to…

So I continued my paper pulp making into the last 2 weeks. I'm working to make more pulp for papercrete and paper mâché clay. We don't have a huge amount of stuff coming in- bills, flyers and such. Over the last few days we had some amazon orders arrive that are on subscription- dog food and dish soap. IMO Cardboard is a superior material for making paper pulp.

Coffee and Recycled Paper Pulp Briquettes are Better?
Well the coffee and paper pulp briquettes are dried and now tested. I see now why so many people make them. They are seriously superior to paper alone. All of the recycled paper briquettes put out a quick 20 minute burst of heat. The difference is in the ash left behind. The paper pulp only briquettes leave behind a fine powdery white ash that stays in the form of the original briquette.

The Week Long Paper Gather Experiment

The first batch of pulp made 29.5 small briquettes and 4 fist sized briquettes. Each one burns for about 20 to 30 minutes in the pellet stove and leaves behind a fine white powdery ash. Fly ash and air borne particles seem to be at a minimum. The second batch…

Matte Plastic Coating

I'm working on my most recent batch of recycled paper pulp. I had shredded a stack of mail and one of the credit card offers had a grippy matte coating. It reminded me of that rubbery coating a lot of electronics had about 5 years ago. I disregarded my worry and ran it through the shredder into my pulp bag. That was a mistake.

When someone says, "Not to make you feel guilty but..." The next thing out of their mouth is designed to make you feel guilty and when you respond with, "oh I don't feel guilty about that." They do not know what to do.

One of the things that has really been upsetting me lately is the grow a garden to make ends meet nonsense. Clearly no one saying this ever spent time on a farm or grown much of their own veggies. Let alone preserve those veggies for winter use. I did. And I can tell you right now growing enough veggies to feed a single person let alone a family, is hard work.

A Return to the Rolled Cardboard Briquette

A Return to the Rolled Cardboard Briquette
I first started to delve into this recycled paper briquette madness on a whim- rolling some cardboard and paper I had in the recycle bin into a log that fit into my charcoal grill. This was quite effective but smokey because I didn't cut my cardboard and paper down to a precise size and I used masking tape to hold it in place.

Worth It?

I've been weighing the "worth" of the recycled paper and other styles of briquettes. Worth meaning time spent to make, cost and energy to create, and final usefulness. Time spent is complicated because much of the time is down time- shred paper, put the paper into the bucket, cover with…

Time spent is complicated because much of the time is down time- shred paper, put the paper into the bucket, cover with water and then wait 5 to 7 days for the paper and card to absorb the water.

I have realized that I'm on vacation. For the whole week. It's the last real vacation I'll take until the first week of July, then I'm going to try to take all of August off. I'll see my fam next week but these first few days I'm doing DIY stuff and relaxing.

I started writing on my micro blog again, this is intended to be a place where stuff that doesn't quite belong on my Ko-fi, regular blog, or Less is More Healthy goes. It's one part prepper, secular homesteader, and a little bit nutty. I just posted about fire pits and paper briquettes.

My wife does not have cancer!!!

My wife's emotional state this AM- she walks into the office, gets my attention, flashes me, point to the biopsy spot and says it's smaller than I expected. Then starts singing, "There's a hole in my boooobie!" to the tune of there's a hole in the bucket. (She is doing well this AM.)

I have printed plushies with two different groups of middle schoolers. Art teachers, if you ever get a chance to print plushies with middle school kids, do it!!!! Oh my God, they were so funny and hilarious and their prints are awesome. It's also a great way to teach press safety. Also, hilarious.
