The appendages are also used to convey emotions by moving them into different positions. Active movement affects the membranes. While most self-generated disturbances can be ignored, the sensitivity of the membranes is dampened by active movement. Thus, increased focus or fear makes them eerily still. Nictitating membrane (third eyelid) can be drawn across the eye for protection, particularly when underwater. Outer teeth are part of the exoskeleton that covers the face. Lips close behind the outer teeth. The actual teeth are located inside the mouth, with pointed incisors and flatter molars. Canines are not prominent and look like incisors.
