Thank you to History Australia editor, Yves Rees, & @austhistassoc.bsky.social for the forum to share my new article about historians and GenAI. So interesting to see where a little curiosity and some generous librarians can take research

Drafting editorial policy is weird, but kind of fun.

One of the things I like about examining uses of AI in research is the opportunity to consider how other professions are using AI and where they are not.

On today's calendar: the work of the NLA.

Curious? Interesting reading here re their Artificial Intelligence Framework:

So we spent months getting students to critically engage and learn how to use university services and this happens.

AI can be, in limited circumstances, a means of enhancing some research.

Such universal approaches lack the nuance needed for a range of schools and disciplines.

Mr Tulk and our librarians?!

This eradication of SLV culture and history is bewildering and also expected from an inexperienced board.

I can deal with snakes, spiders, magpies, etc. But put a journal article with revisions in front of me and there's pouting, sulking, and intense questioning about my life choices.

**Sigh** Still sitting here doing the damn thing. Guess that's something.

The Australian government has missed an opportunity to become a global leader in the ways of safeguarding AI users, and other people online, against the bias, disinformation and harms that can be perpetuated by unregulated AI use.

Okay, this is fun. Also, our family has strong film opinions. Who would've guessed it.
This is a Bill Simmons game, but you’re stranded on a desert island. You can only have one actor’s filmography. You get it all, including cameos. But just the one performer.

I’m taking Cate Blanchett: Talented Mr. Ripley, LOTR, Life Aquatic, Black Bag, Tár, Ponyo, Hot Fuzz, Eyes Wide Shut, Thor

Apparently sitting in the lounge, pointing out "That's new. That's a new scene. That's a re-developed scene" when The Teen is watching Return of the Jedi is not condoned parental behaviour.

Fun though.

Cultural institutions need consistent support, but sometimes they need us to be louder, more pointed, and gain more traction than usual.

The State Library of Victoria needs our support to stop further cuts to research support.

In light of record submission rates and a large volume of AI-generated slop, SocArXiv recently implemented a policy requiring ORCIDs linked in the OSF profile of submitting authors, and narrowing our focus to social science subjects. Today we are taking two more steps:

Curious to see that once upon a time we had "field research" as the standard practice and now "desk research" is a norm.

I wonder how often the latter leads to the former?
