One thing that surprised and depressed me about teaching middle-school was realizing that not everyone's parents did this. Most kids couldn't tell me what stuff their parents liked or name any stuff that they had shared. The assumption from parents seemed to be there's no cross-generational art
oh no, they're gonna find a way to get this into my classroom by any means aren't they
Porting teaching engine over to #raylib has been very pleasant
yes! Have this talk each semester with students. I get the allure tho. I think it persists because gamer have so few deep interactions with other media (just go dancing!). Games have probably heightened my awareness of interacting with books/film tho
I was just thinking about watching this
My top 10 of 21st century. Gonna kick myself later for forgetting obvious things. Surprised how much anime got on here but they've really stuck with me
it's painful and ironic how incapable programmers seem to be about thinking systemically, plus they don't seem to care about or know any history at all
He's kinda the perfect foil to Goku because they're both big doofus babies, but Goku just happens to be a perfect angel. Buu arc is kinda hard for me to enjoy just because it's very long and very dour, even tho there's no such thing as consequences really in DBZ
ha, bringing up NES games just illustrated my point to myself, because I really haven't played many of them and wouldn't have even thought of any of those as an example of permadeath
But I think the annoyance at roguelikes is just a lot of people who don't necessarily have experience with arcade games, so the idea of permadeath doesn't trace back further than Spelunky (and even Spelunky is too far back for a lot of people)
I think use of Rogue is apt because the inspiration was really explicit for Spelunky which really kicked off the trend, and usually the technique functions more like Rogue than an arcade game. Tho I have heard plenty of people say AoF is a rogue-like because its got proc-gen (it isn't!)
I'll be at DreamHack with @societyofplay.bsky.social showing of The Art of Flight. Bring some friends by and play some action space ballet co-op!

I'd definitely love to chat sometime
Yeah I definitely need coffee but I have more control (or at least don't lose control for as long). ADHD meds just locked me into whatever I was doing when they kicked in. Sometimes good (book), sometimes maybe less good (Halo snipers)
or hopefully they have an ability to mine something worthy out of any compelling activity
oh that definitely resonates with me. That's one reason I stopped taking ADHD meds years ago because I found it messed up ability to evaluate what I should be doing. I notice this having kids too, there's probably more compelling things than there are worthy things.
especially wonder about this with oral tradition where it's only getting passed down by memory, so you kinda have to optimize for that, which is why Homer has a lot stock metrical ideas and phrases that get reused
interesting! I may not understand, but is there a difference between "getting" your attention and "having" your attention? I've taken up drawing, so I'm spending a lot of time attending to things, but it's like the intrinsic pull that object exerts on me. It feels essential to the creative impulse
Yeah, hard to see an angle where that isn't malpractice. I think the best we can do is make something that retains our attention, and hope it captivates someone else.
Wouldn't know what to do with myself other wise
What if you could play a game for #screenshotsaturday The Art of Flight is out on Steam now
