The number one suggestion I get when making magic items is, "It lets you cast <insert any spell>!" And I'm surprised how often i have to explain how boring that feels.

We need to at least put some fun restrictions on it! What is your favorite magic item that restrictions make better?
A magic item for use in Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition tabletop role-playing game. This is a homebrew magic item created by Cloaks & Capes.

Mirror of Borrowed Visage
Wondrous Item, uncommon (requires attunement)

“A porcelain hand mirror with a blank face protruding from the back.”

A creature that looks into this magic mirror can have its likeness stored within it. The mirror can hold 5 different faces at a time. When a new face is stored, you must choose one of the others to erase from the mirror.

You can take a Magic action to cast the Disguise Self spell on yourself but you must choose one of the faces stored within the mirror. While you are disguised in this way, the face of the form you are in appears on the back of the mirror.

Druids of the Circle of the Green Knight are more than defenders of nature. They’re blessed with preternatural gifts that allow them to adapt to any environment, grow through adversity, and persevere even through death. Green Knights take a more martial approach to their duties, embodying the cold and cruel side of the wilds when necessary.

Force of Nature
Level 6 Circle of the Green Knight Feature
As a Magic Action, you can expend a use of your Wild Shape and summon a Force of Nature. The Force of Nature can then make an attack as part of this action.
The Force of Nature remains until it is reduced to 0 Hit Points, until you use this feature to summon it again, or until you die. Anything the Force of Nature was wearing or carrying is left behind when it vanishes.
You can mount or dismount the Force of Nature as a Bonus Action. In addition, when you take the Attack action, your Force of Nature can attack the same target requiring no command to do so, if it is within range.

In Dungeons? You're one room away, even if something happened you have time to get to one another and can shout. Different cities? While the Necromancy Reanimators Association is in town and looking for you? You better pray your dice curse has lifted.
cloaksandcapes.bsky.social
I think it's fine so long as it's not for entire arks. Whenever the party wants to split and it will actually be dangerous, i make sure to set expectations about how dangerous it is. Like in town? Sure, go wild. Shop and play tricks on npcs.
cloaksandcapes.bsky.social
I spent 2 days on my tiny lil' forests and I still don't like 'em. But i'm also new to making maps, so i always go to get inspiration from others lol.

How often do players in your D&D party\games have what we like to call ‘imaginary friends’?

In our game…almost all of them. This doesn’t even count the Monk who can talk to her daughter from another life in her head. #dndmemes
A D&D meme. Pictured are three cartoon spider-men who are pointing at one another. They are all labeled differently, the first says, “Druid who sees his dead husband,” another says, “Druid who sees his dead husband,” and the last one says, “Cleric talks with their deities through a keystone orb.”

We made a Talisman of the Bright Moon inspired by Sailor Moon, so we needed something opposite it.

If your favorite anime inspired a magic item...what would the opposite of that item be? #DnD #DungeonsandDragons
A magic item for use in Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition tabletop role-playing game. This is a homebrew magic item created by Cloaks & Capes.

Talisman of the Bright Sun
Wondrous Item, uncommon

“A sparkling talisman decorated with orange and yellow citrines. It has alternating short and long wavy protrusions around the edge that look like rays of sunlight. ”

When you cast a spell using a spell slot you can use your Reaction to cause a burst of light around a creature you can see within 30 feet of you. The target must make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or have the Blinded condition until the end of your next turn.

Almost 3 years later we've made close to 1100 magic items, 16 subclasses, 4 species and a lot more!

The one that got me to where I am now with my Patreon\D&D content is, 'anything worth doing is worth doing poorly.' Even if it's just 1% effort. You'll make more progress doing 1% day, then waiting for a day you feel you can give 100%.

One magic item a day is what i committed too.
laurenwalshart.bsky.social
I saw something recently that said a strategy for adhd is you just need to commit to doing 30%. The full scope of 100% of a project is just too overwhelming. So just start with some thumbnails or sketches for now and then commit to another 30% another day or week. Any progress IS progress

Straight up bad curses with no benefits DO suck.
cloaksandcapes.bsky.social
How do you feel about curses or cursed magic items with benefits? Do you like to run the risk? Or would you rather play it safe?

Jinx Dice
Wondrous Item, very rare, cursed

“These two dice were made with the skulls of some very unlucky pixies. The agony and hatred they felt during their untimely demise amplified the misfortune of whatever curse had been laid upon them.”

Whenever you finish a Long Rest, roll 2d6 to determine how many jinx points you have for the day. While you have at least 1 jinx point, whenever any dice is rolled, you can use your Reaction to spend jinx points and raise or lower the result by the amount spent.

Jinx points do not carry over and always reset when you finish a Long Rest.

Curse of the Jinx. If you lose this magic item while you still have jinx points, and do not find it before your next Long Rest, you gain a level of Exhaustion equal to half the number of jinx points (rounded up) you had when you lost it.

Mad Science Artificer Subclass. There is a thin line between brilliance and madness, and those that call themselves Artificers walk it often. The descent into Mad Science is paved with good intentions by a desire to fix some unsolvable problem in the world. Whether an Artificer’s ends justify the means, those that practice Mad Science push the envelope of what is physically possible, and what is morally acceptable.

Living Experiment

Level 3 Mad Science Feature

Years of hard work, research, and experimentation have yielded your greatest creation.

Using any tools with which you are proficient, you can take a Magic action to create a Living Experiment.  If you have access to the corpse of another creature type, you can change various aspects of the experiment’s stat block based on the creature type of the parts used when creating it.

You can change, upgrade and source new creature parts at your GM’s discretion. 5e Compatible, Cloaks and Capes.

Talking things through with a player on what they envision\want for their story, but delivering the chance for it to happen in a way that is still surprising and interesting.

I've managed it with close friends of mine, but always worry about either just giving them what they think is coming, or--
cloaksandcapes.bsky.social
Yus! i'd love insight from you on how to best lead new players in developing their first character, how to think about\set up backstories, and what the process of fleshing that out looks like.

There's also a very interesting line to walk between--
cloaksandcapes.bsky.social
👂You don't need to paint the ENTIRE cave. They know what a cave is, is it slimy or dry? Is there a wet smell? Rotten? Can they taste water or dryness in the air? Maybe a fungus gives it a sweet or sour scent?

We don't have to be Tolkien, just give a few points and allow the PCs to paint the rest.
cloaksandcapes.bsky.social
GMs, do you find it hard to describe things in DnD?

👃You just need 2-3 details. Pick some senses (Sight, touch etc) Describe those. The PCs will fill in the rest with their imagination.

Also, is @lukeplunkett.com throwing one down under next time?

In one sentence, tell us how to BEST play your favorite D&D or TTRPG class, archetype, or faction? #DnDMemes
A D&D meme with a statue of Jesus that is smiling and pointing with one hand while giving a thumbs up with the other. The top of the meme says “How do you play Warlock?” and the bottom says, “Eldritch Blaaaaaaast!” There is also the words “Pew pew” three times over the finger gun hand.
