Yes. It's actually fairly unpleasant to walk in the United States. Cars are everywhere, forget that picturesque walk with a toddler to the neighborhood school, the air is choked with cars. There's literally nowhere besides a hiking trail or a golf course. And golf courses have gatekeepers.
