Outdoor air pollution I believe- also looking at indoor air would be useful
cleanairie.bsky.social
Because we spend most of our time indoors, the majority of outdoor air pollution exposure can actually happen indoors. Climate change Ambient air quality and indoor air quality are linked.
Addressing all spaces where we breathe, is urgently needed to improve our health.

Dr Dan Middleton, senior author of the study and Lecturer and Cancer Epidemiologist from the Centre for Public Health adds: "Outdoor air pollution has been classified as a Group 1 human carcinogen since 2013, so these findings come as no surprise.

Every lung cancer case linked to air pollution represents suffering that could have been avoided if we act decisively to reduce exposure."

Mrs Rawan Alhattab, lead author and PhD
Student from the Centre for Public Health at Queen's University Belfast says: "These findings remind us that air pollution is not just an environmental issue—it is a clear and preventable threat to public health.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Northern Ireland, with over 1,300 new diagnoses every year. While smoking remains the largest risk factor, this study underscores that air pollution is an urgent and preventable cause of the disease, - both should be tackled
cleanairie.bsky.social
On a population scale, exposure above the WHO's former guideline of 10 ug/m3 - still regularly exceeded in many areas - accounts for 10% of lung cancers in Northern Ireland.
cleanairie.bsky.social
The study estimates that:
People in the most polluted areas have a 37% higher risk of lung cancer than those in the least polluted areas. The excess risk is especially marked in women, who show a 79% higher risk at the highest exposure levels compared to women in the lowest.

What we can do
1. Monitor Indoor air quality.
2. Fit mechanical ventilation systems.
3. Use portable Air Purifiers
4. Reduce polluting building materials
5. Advocate for standards and regulations and enact implementation measures.

What we Know
We spend > 90% of time indoors more for newborn and in utero

Air pollution
Can be 2-5 higher indoors

PM VOC’s PFAS can all build up in poorly ventilated tightly sealed buildings

Polluted air from outside can leak into buildings too

This is a screenshot from Harvard explaining how air quality impacts early childhood development

Changes in your home can include
•changing from a gas to an induction hob •turning on the extractor fan to high when you’re cooking •opening the windows •swapping aerosols and cleaning sprays for natural products
•retrofitting or placing in new homes hvac or MHRV Systems

The ingenious study in Bradford aims to understand how activities in our home can increase indoor air pollutants and affect human health conditions such as asthma would you be interested in participating in such a study? Comment +Let us know

INGENIOUS
Do you know what harmful airborne pollutants are found in your home? Many of the activities we do in our own homes produce airborne pollutants, including particles and chemicals that can be harmful to...

Yes, studies show that frying a burger indoors can release as much, or even more, particulate matter (PM) than a car exhaust especially without proper ventilation.

Steaming <Boiling<grilling<frying

most of our exposure to air pollution actually happens indoors.

How bad is your burger?Did you know-Household frying (and fossil fuel burning) are contributors to household indoor pollutants.

Releasing large amounts of PM2.5 and ultra fine particles, formaldehydes voc , PAH’s +aromatic amines
Similar compounds are found in car exhaust fumes

The global commission on Health indoor Air is working towards individualised national blueprints for healthy indoor air strategy implementation

Healthy indoor air standards monitoring + solutions are urgently needed as we spend more and more time indoors
