This BBC Bitesize teaching aid is a good introduction to RVW's The Lark Ascending, with background on the composer and an overview of the piece.

Designed for younger students, it's a great introduction for older audiences too!

If you start listening to this recording of Orlando Gibbons' 'This is the Record of John' at 23:58.13 on New Year's Eve, midnight will strike as John says "NO".

Start 2026 the right way.

The Christmas season lasts for much longer than two days.

Many churches offer alternative choral services, and while choirs break after Christmas Day, festive music can often be heard into January.

Come back in 2026 to find Evensong.

As Christmas draws nearer, search out Evensong amidst the candlelit carol services.

They offer a peaceful doorway into the final days of Advent.

Many choirs are singing some of their most atmospheric music at this point in Advent.

If you have never been to Evensong before, this is an ideal moment to discover it.

And if this is your bag, you can hear the whole of "A Ceremony of Carols" at our concert tomorrow (Wed 10) at 7.30 at Guy's Hospital Chapel. And with a harp.
The St Margaret's Choristers sing As Dew in Aprille from Benjamin Britten's much-loved A Ceremony of Carols.

Hear more from the choir in the St Margaret's Advent Liturgy, which is available to watch on demand until 6 January at: www.westminster-abbey.org/worship-music/watch-services?id=15931

Not all December services are carol services.

Advent worship often has a stillness all of its own.

Evensong in Advent can be a refreshing contrast to the pace of the month.

Oh no! I'm out of Whammageddon. But I'm still in Harkageddon. And, more importantly, you can come to our concert on Wed 10 Dec, 7.30pm Guy's Hospital and still be safe by the end of it. So no excuses!

Happy Advent to you and your kin! And everyone else's kin too, come to that. As every December so far this decade, I'm going to do an Advent Calendar of beautiful and brilliant carols, with each day's added to a YouTube playlist and also to the ongoing Spotify one, now in its sixth(!) year.

Saw "The Choral" yesterday. Quite enjoyed it and enjoyed the recognisable characters and habits of a choir. Lovely to hear some "Dream of Gerontius", and was reminiscing singing it under Mark Elder (with another choir). I gave myself bonus points for spotting Alice Coote singing over the credits

And if you'd like to hear the original (and we didn't say better), join us at our Christmas Concert 10 Dec 7.30pm at Guy's Chapel, Guy's Hospital
Much like Sid James isn't Benjamin Britten, this also is not Benjamin Britten.
