By chance, I was in a store and met a Disney exec, so I took the opportunity to ask them why doesn’t Hollywood want to make movies anymore? Their answer cracked my brain a little, but I am not so perplexed anymore. Hope this helps you too…🧵 /1
I’ll be at Lighbox Expo this Friday, speaking on a panel at 3:30 - Adapting Games into Animated Series and Films - with my Angry Birds directing partner Fergal Reilly @f3rgal.bsky.social. Hope to see some familiar and new faces there!

“Fuck AI”

— Guillermo del Toro

🎥 Vanity Fair
Imagine how good I would be at life if I did everything right the first time.
Okay, let’s go again.
In honor of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand

I'll go first: Six page commercial lease.

If you accidentally post AI slop and are told “hey that’s AI” the correct answer is to go “aw shit I didn’t know” and delete it. Not “oh oops oh well, watcha gonna do” and keep it up because it’s giving you engagement. Stop it.
I’m working on building up something like that again. Remember the random guy that showed up eating a pickle and refused to talk? Good times.
Remember during the lockdown how we started new hobbies to keep our minds occupied in order to stay sane? I’m feeling the same need right now.
I sat in one this weekend!
I hope I’m not wrong, but I’m going to go out on a pretty stable limb and say an animator colleague of mine animated that - Bill Waldman. Good on ya, Bill! People like your stuff! Wonder if he’s still working?
Haven’t glanced in Fallon’s direction since

Hand animating a TEENY clip for a YT video and I feel so… EMPOWERED. Creating something from scratch – FOR MYSELF, BECAUSE I WANT IT TO EXIST – feels like a giant middle finger to everything wrong in tech and entertainment right now.

Trying out Clip Studio Paint for this, and I’m mostly liking it.
Fewer studios = fewer movies
Someone was great a de-upholstering.
What a deal! Can’t believe no one’s taken it. 🤮
In the absence of work, I’m writing and recording a video series about what I’ve learned making movies. I’m in the midst of publishing my first thing: a YT Shorts series documenting my experience writing a screenplay. After that, I’ll be publishing longer form videos. It’s here:

Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio had a budget of $35 million and every single character was moved one frame at a time by a human being. What the fuck are we even doing!!!!!!!
OpenAI confirms they're helping make an AI-generated movie called 'Critterz'

• Goal is to finish production in 9 months
• Budget is ~$30M
• Plan is to debut the film at Canne
• 'Paddington 3' writers penned the script
• Art will be fed into Chat GPT 5 and other image models

Adjusted for inflation Spirited Away cost $22 million to make. The Triplets of Belleville cost $16.5 million, Cartoon Saloon's Wolfwalkers cost $14.28 million, and Oscar winner Flow cost only $4 million. These critically acclaimed, made by real people films, cost less than this pile of actual vomit.

Burn the AI Slop movies projects because we can have things like Decorado made by humans. There are thousands of people with good ideas and the talent to make them. Support them.
"Decorado" animated feature film is coming in Spanish theaters on October 24.
Directed by Alberto Vazquez (Birdboy, Unicorn Wars), and based on his short film.

Absolutely! Why not make more good things. Or give me $30mil and I’ll make an awesome original animated film.
This is a possibility.
