I agree with you that the ‘Trumpian version’ of Phariseeism does not ennoble him. But the allusion, which you missed, is to the fact that even the Phariseeism contested by Christ was not what you are talking about, but rather the display of an identity-based religiosity devoid of any spiritual soul

I completely agree with what Mr Talarico said. For me, a politician must behave according to Christian values if he is a believer, but he does not need to be a preacher or openly say he is a Christian in order to be a politician. But I am not American!
