特朗普似乎事先并不知道前澳大利亚总理陆克文，就坐在他对面。而陆克文早前曾称特朗普是“历史上最具破坏性的总统”、“背叛西方的人”以及“村里的傻瓜”。
陆克文在2017年说：“任何关心公共政策，无论是国内还是国际事务的人，普遍认为他疯了。”
当被记者问及是否对陆克文过去的言论感到担忧时，特朗普最初回应称：“我对他一无所知。如果他说过什么不好听的，也许他该道歉。”
