The British cinema classic My Beautiful Laundrette (15) is 40 years old, and it's showing in Wotton-under-Edge on Sunday 5 October as part of our selection from this year's Cinema Rediscovered Festival. Here, writer Hanif Kureishi and director Stephen Frears look back.

This October, enter the world of Menelik Shabazz (1954-2021), a pioneer of Black British filmmaking. We had the privilege of welcoming him to @wshed.bsky.social in Bristol on several occasions so this strand is close to our hearts 💜

Saw the brilliant 'Northern Lights' @queensfilmtheatre.bsky.social on Saturday as part of the @cineredis.bsky.social tour. A wonderful film, a sort of snowy 'Days Of Heaven', about the founding of the Nonpartisan League in 1916 North Dakota. Remembering is a radical act.

if you’re feeling high on One Battle After Another, i’d urge you to seek out Jules Dassin’s Uptight, an incendiary film from 1968, told from the perspective of the burgeoning Black power movement

directed by the Jewish, blacklisted Dassin, and co-written and produced by Ruby Dee

We saw the restored version of Charles Burnett's Killer of Sheep -- third time, there is so much in each viewing! I had not realised it was conceived as part of a trilogy -- the second part being Stan's vacation, the third his return to work. Interview with #CharlesBurnett from 2002 here.

In our July 2002 issue, Burnett recalled his discouraging school years, his experience at an anarchic UCLA, and the eventual release of his thesis film, Killer of Sheep
