Steadman had asked what he should do next & I suggested Martial, as he's my favorite author and I'd love to do more w/ my students. He suggested I do it myself, & I finally did.

Was more than 140 & I hope to do more later. I'd love to see more Martial commentaries so please tackle him yourself too!

Hi Bluesky! I post on Greco-Roman (late) antiquity, metal music, & especially combinations thereof. 🏺🎸

My 1st book, "Julian Augustus" is out 26 September. Preorder here: global.oup.com/academic/pro...

Lastly, I'm undertaking a challenge to cook a dish from every country in alphabetical order. 🌍🍴

“…if only for the simple reason that he doesn’t deserve it.”

Great opener.

I talk about the Punic wars with my students when we read some Eutropius. I’m curious as to how much weight you give Rome changing commanders every year in contributing to its success and failure, esp against a foe who did not change commanders.

Shit, I was wrong.

Turns out, it had nothing to do with wokeness.

My pre-viewing guess as to why he failed: he went woke.

Will update as to whether or not I was correct.

Hannibal’s tactical masterstroke at Cannae was the capstone of a brilliant Italian campaign against the Romans and their allies, but it was not enough to win the war. This video explains why Hannibal failed despite battlefield success:

Trump, amidst selling the country for personal gain, like openly, is protecting me from Suzanne, who does logistics for National Parks, and Dale, a curator at the Smithsonian.

He breathlessly decries politicians working for themselves or the state rather than the people of the state before immediately shrugging at ppl of the state being laid off.

Like he realizes federal workers are people of the state too, right?

There’s a Euripides joke in here somewhere.

Let the market decide….this?

Absolutely not. A proposal like that is just maliciously insane.

Because history is so often written by the victors, it’s difficult to discuss ancient history without making the Romans our protagonists- this week we look at the life and career of Persian king Shapur I, discussing why his achievements surpassed his Roman rivals

I love that Alexander doesn’t merit hardly any mention after the wedding. Like, Worf is off to Qonos to be an ambassador. Hope Alex survived the war and doesn’t want to catch up or anything!

For me tonight it was working on a fun professional-personal project that may help in the classroom but isn’t what I need to be prioritizing like grading or assessment writing.

Are you saying the Homoousians won?! It’s not still up for debate?!

The nature and similarity or lack thereof of the substance is still of import in modern pulpits, is it not?!

I spend a lot of time with my high schoolers (insofar as i can in a high school class) talking about how different Roman religio was from modern religion.

We def need more humanities, more philosophy, more history, etc.

Modern Christians would not recognize Constantine’s idea of their religion

Agree; it’s bizarre sometimes.

In addition to accidentally getting rare ones by stumbling onto them or having bugs give them to you (got one the other day I shouldn’t have) there are programs to give yourself Steam achievements so I always wonder if that is statistically significant.

Based on what past experience?

Please, someone ask him why he thinks that.

I just started it and I’m thrilled to see Dr. Talbert was your PhD advisor! I took every class with him that I could in undergrad & did some work at the Ancient World Mapping Center.

Really looking forward to diving in and learning something to use in my unit on “class in Rome” with my students

It’s also quite a process to leave. You need to consider: money, employment, being near to family (as a resource, for caregiving, because you love them, etc), will the new place let you (if it’s a diff country for instance).

And more.

“Just move” is such a silly response.
