Or should have just pulled out. Wrote off the spent resources as sunk cost and pivoted hard to emerging economies.

Should have gotten many more concessions than this...had them by the balls. Should have forced: a) ZERO increase in footing the bill to keep US troops on the peninsula (dude, just leave. Oh right you can't- it's in your own interest to keep a foothold in the pacific theatre close to China),

Distrust is fodder for revolution. And ppl are angry at systems that don't work for them, ready for a revolution. Ripe for taking advantage, as the current admin is doing. GDP has nothing to do with it.

GDP doesn't measure inequality or other "health" indicators of a society. So yah US has high GDP - and the top 1% are richer than the bottom 50%. The average American can't afford a sudden $400 expense. With that level of inequality, discontent breeds distrust in institutions.
