It’s over 1,000km from Berlin to Paris

There’s now a direct daytime train between them, that takes 8 hours and costs just €59. Leave at 10am, arrive 6pm.

And… it’s just 1% the carbon emissions of the equivalent flight

High-speed Paris-Berlin daily train service debuts
The route is the first directly linking the two capitals' city centres.

The last General Election has seen much talk about Reform UK's popularity in so-called 'left-behind places, characterized by socioeconomic deprivation. Looking at variation in deprivation levels across the UK's constituencies suggests this pattern exists, but only partially. A short thread. 🧵

The term 'left-behind' conceals more than it reveals.
#Europe’s vulnerable #regions differ: some bear scars of deindustrialisation, others face demographic collapse, while rural areas grapple with isolation.
@sanne_velthuis et al. show that policy must grasp this complexity.

So you got the plan, but have you got the state capacity? (To misquote Shania Twain)

Looking forward to presenting this paper on state capacity for decarbonisation next week at @mpimmg.bsky.social's conf on 'The Fragmentary State'

Paper has been a v long time coming but I think it's nearly there 🙏

Gorgon CCS is the world's largest pure carbon capture and storage operation. Since 2019, it has been weakly sputtering away out on Barrow Island at Australia's highest emitting industrial facility.

You may have heard it's a failure. Do you know why it's a failure?

for some reason the maps with current and planned green H2 production did not post. Here again:

18/ Even in a more limited market, demand certainty is crucial: Governments can drive this by setting standards and linking contracts to the use of green steel and cement.

christina-wolf.bsky.social
17/ Rissman et al (2020) suggest minimising material overuse (buildings use 2x the steel required for structural integrity), avoiding premature demolition (buildings can last up to 200 years instead of the typical 60-80) + alternative building materials. doi.org/10.1016/j.ap...

christina-wolf.bsky.social
16/ Even then, if sustainability is the goal, demand for energy-intensive products needs to reduce. This is bad news for steel producers already facing global excess supply but perhaps the creed needs to be producing less but better?
