This is an excellent newsletter that you should subscribe to.

My last software job made all of these mistakes continually. I found my best product design alignment happened when the leads hung out at a table all day in public and filled whiteboards with passerby.
Ever been in a meeting that fucking sucks? Rhetorical question.

Unfortunately, getting people to what you want requires that you tell them about it — and that's a meeting. Trying to get rid of meetings simply creates a dysfunctional work environment. The only fix is to design the meetings right.
This meeting could have been a picnic
Well-designed meetings are just as important to our work as well-designed artifacts.

BREAKING: Starbucks workers have just authorized a massive strike.

Union Starbucks baristas voted to authorize the strike by 92%.

Now baristas in over 25 cities could launch an unfair labor practice strike on Thursday, November 13th.

My search engine results for “How To” articles are now crammed with ai slop. I can’t tell until I click on it and start reading. There is no way I’m going to trust the instructions written by a “best guess this is what you want to hear” machine.

In the autumn, when the mosquitos have all been eaten, I return to my backyard birds; a cold weather birder.

I am always here for a good viola joke.
I presume that orchestra people have vicious stereotypes about clarinetists that could be deployed here. I once heard three performers riff on violists for ten minutes and it was frightening.
“A clarinet player was arrested after playing her instrument to the tune of the ‘Ghostbusters’ theme song outside of a Portland ICE facility…”

You can’t hate fascists and use AI slop generators. They’re the same thing: total destruction of truth at scale.

Reading this article felt like vindication of all the unease I have felt about the AI bubble. 🫧
A very efficient, distilled and to me pretty persuasive version of the bear case against AI economics.
No surprise, this is very good. pluralistic.net/2025/09/27/e...

what would an LLM do if it were bored with nothing to do?

I’m visiting my parents who are streaming church this morning. I just heard a prerecorded message that exhorts the faithful to “tap your phone to the disk on the chair in front of you or one of the giving kiosks around the auditorium.” They also accept crypto.

Your timeline has been blessed by the ghost of inky cleanliness. May your fountain pen ink refills be eerily clean in this spooky season.
Today is studio clean-out day so I hope everyone enjoys the scream I scrumpt when I opened the bottom desk drawer and discovered a small piece of paper towel which I had apparently used to wipe my fountain pen after refilling it

I finally got to hold a few Kaweco Sport fountain pens today after a few months of fogging up my computer screen. My verdict: too small for my hand. Even posted, the resin pens felt easy to snap and the steel or aluminum sports felt too tiny.

The Dept of Education is now accepting comments on a proposed rule that would overhaul Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and make it too expensive for students to go into work that threatens the Trump administration

Folks have til *Sept. 17* to oppose the changes

Imagine that we are roommates. You ask me to restock the toilet paper. To prove that I did so, I show you the receipt.

The next morning, when you are in need of toilet paper, you find that the drawer is empty. This is because I have invented a new innovative method that I call Lean Shopping.
