Todd Snider, who died last week, launched a career in Memphis on his way to becoming a songwriter unlike any other, wading around in his own sorrow, with both moral clarity and unrivaled jokes, all the way to a too-early end. I wrote about him here.

Todd Snider was a singular songwriter and a voice for outcasts and underdogs
Chris Herrington: "Todd Snider launched his career in Memphis, and then reinvented himself a decade later. For his last 20 years, there was no songwriter quite like him. "

Over the past 10 games, all off the bench, Cam Spencer is averaging 17 points and 5 assists on 64-64-100 shooting splits. So, that's pretty good.

A very good sign for Clarke’s return, which is needed even more now with Edey out.

The timing around the Morant/Edey returns/absences is obviously a dark comedy. The Edey thing we probably should have seen coming. Soreness issues were likely inevitable returning from that surgery, and a cautious response to them even more so for a player that big and important.

Part 2 of this Grizzlies Mailbag envisions a full-strength rotation, revisits coaching staff transition, ponders the next American MVP and, because There's More to Life Than Basketball, ends with my Top 10 albums of 2025 (before a Springsteen encore).

The Grizzlies have won seven of their past nine games, and the three most consistently productive players in this stretch have something in common.

That and more in this week's Memphis Grizzlies deep dive.

Chris Herrington: “The Grizzlies have been playing their basketball of late, and the three players leading the way have something unlikely in common.”

Good win for the Grizzlies. Awesome Cedric Coward performance. No idea why they never brought Edey back in.

Grizzlies 25: Stromile Swift was a blast but grounded by 'Strotential'
Stromile Swift started fewer than 100 games in his NBA career, never averaged a dozen points in a season, but still ranks in the top 20 in franchise history in points, rebounds, steals and blocks.

With Zach Edey’s return, the Memphis Grizzlies have overcome backcourt injuries to win with power. It’s not quite what head coach Tuomas Iisalo envisioned.

The Grizzlies are obviously capable of losing to anyone anywhere, but this half has real "we spent a holiday in Los Angeles" vibes. Sloppy turnovers, weak transition defense, short-arming lots of shots.

Grizz-Clippers. Technically, for Grizzlies to advance in the NBA Cup they need to win this and have a greater point-differential in Cup games than the Suns-Thunder loser. Realistically, they need the Suns to lose that game. If so they'd need those games to erase a current 26-point differential gap.

Grizzlies are 7-12. Zach Edey has played six games and the team hasn't lost his minutes in any of them. (A silly +39 in an overtime win tonight.)

Feels like the national conversation pulled the plug on the team with the bad start and all the Ja stuff, but there's something percolating with Edey.
