Distressing mental images affect around 3 in 4 people with psychosis.

They can feel vivid, emotional, and overwhelming, yet are rarely addressed in therapy.

The iMAPS-2 trial tested a therapy focused on these images and their link to negative beliefs.

💭 70% of people with psychosis experience distressing intrusive images, yet therapy rarely targets them.

Imagery-focused therapy (tested in the iMAPS-2 trial) could change that, offering new ways to reduce distress and support recovery: buff.ly/jbM0TRo

What if therapy focused not on thoughts or voices, but images in our mind's eye?

The iMAPS-2 trial tested an imagery-focused therapy for psychosis; helping people make sense of vivid, distressing mental images.

iMAPS is:
safe ✅
acceptable ✅
ready for a full-scale RCT 👇

#TheMostInterestingThinginMentalHealth: What if #trauma focused therapy for young people, isn't working the way we thought it would?
A new trial N=120. No differences at therapy end, but 11 months later, reduced anxiety, fewer panic attacks. It takes time👇

Great to have written this blog with my colleague Dr Nicola Airey on this important review of core beliefs and psychosis!
Through the mental lens: core beliefs & psychosis.

Negative beliefs like “I’m worthless” or “others can’t be trusted” are strongly linked to hallucinations, paranoia & suicidality.

A new systematic review analysed 79 studies. 🧵
