In @jacobinmagazin.bsky.social, I look at Trump's extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean, how they may be a prelude to wider war with Venezuela, and where they fall in the history of US extrajudicial killings, including Cold War assassinations and the drone program.

After his excellent reporting on the sentencing of CIA analyst Asif Rahman, who released files on Israel's plans to strike Iran, I had @chipgibbons.bsky.social join me for further discussion of this Espionage Act case that was largely ignored by the US news media thedissenter.org/imprisoned-f...

Here is my report from Asif Rahman's sentencing hearing.

Rahman pled guilty under the Espionage Act to disclosing documents about a potential Israeli strike on Iran.

I am headed to Alexandria, Virginia for the sentencing hearing of Asif Rahman.

Rahman pled guilty to violating for the Espionage Act, likely for revealing Israeli plans for a military strike on Iran.

His cases remains cloaked in remarkable secrecy.

It bodes poorly for a regime if the delivery of baby formula and crutches for child amputees poses such an existential threat that they must deploy armed thugs to commit a brazen act of lawless piracy in international waters.

Doesn't really seem like a position of strength.

In my latest report on Mahmoud Khalil's ongoing legal cases for @jacobinmagazin.bsky.social I write "every minute Khalil remains confined for opposing a genocide casts a shadow across the First Amendment."

Mahmoud Khalil’s Case Is About the Future of Free Speech
Despite some recent advances in his case against the Trump administration, Mahmoud Khalil remains confined for opposing genocide in Gaza — an imprisonment that makes a mockery of the First Amendment.

I am extremely disturbed by reports of a drone flying over the Madleen Gaza flotilla.

Given Israel's history of piracy and terrorism against those trying bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, we need all eyes on the freedom flotilla right now.

They must be guaranteed safe passage.

Why does this ominous message warning me about potential prosecution under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act pop up when I try to log into the State Department FOIA portal to check the status of my request?

Exactly when does filing a FOIA become "unauthorized personal business?"

There is nothing, absolutely nothing that justifies the killing of diplomats or embassy staff on the streets of DC.

It's also how jarring how these two deaths are being treated as a far bigger news story than the mass slaughter of innocents in Gaza.

Israel is potentially planning an attack against Iran in violation of international law if we reach a deal with Iran they don't approve of.

The goal of such a strike is to undermine our diplomacy.

This is not an ally.

As a civil libertarian, I am thankful our Constitution has a narrow definition of treason and am disturbed by overly broad foreign agent registration laws.

But I feel like conspiring with a foreign government to deprive Americans of their 1A rights warrants legal consequences.

I am thankful everyone on board is safe--I vividly remember the Mavi Marmara massacre--if Israel is responsible for this act of terrorism they must be held accountable.

We are so glad our CODEPINK members involved with the flotilla are safe, along with the 16 humanitarians and crew on board the ship.
