I'd say the exception to this is if it's just one liner/single page splash text, over the head can be ok.

comprehension at a glance without too much focus or strain basically

I prefer off to the side; over the head can be straining to look at depending on vertical FOV and distance from character whereas textbox in front breaks the immersion (and prevents photo opportunities!)

I haven't used it for much video editing yet BUT it's a lifesaver when it comes to working with image sequences, such as extracting frames from video (so fast) or making gifs

So there I am, looking at my 90k poly avatar edit, pondering whether 70k is truly the limit I should be aiming for.
