There is something happening, Stede is sure of it. It's been decades, sure, but Stede knows Ed. He learned to read those colors all those years ago. He knows the anxious greys and blacks infiltrating Ed's bright hues. Even if the decisive purple itself is…new…there's something about it all that's not sitting right.
Maybe it's his own fault.
Maybe he should have never spoken Ed's name into existence in that orange juice aisle. Should have just swallowed it down and let it sink there, to the pit of his stomach, safe and kept. A secret. Maybe that's all Ed actually wanted.
It was pretty weird, after all. A true Stede Bonnet Special: weird.
Stede sits with that for a moment, wondering if there's really anything he can do anyway. He’d spent the week visiting the shop near-daily. He’d spent countless hours on increasingly fruitless internet searches: Ed, short grey beard, long charcoal hair. Ed, six foot zero. Ed, beauty manifest in moonlight. He’d wandered out to his favorite mountain overlook the night prior simply to get away from Mary’s watchful gaze. Because Mary notices.
And now, Mary notices Stede's distraction when he wanders through the kitchen for some breakfast tea. Watches as he dumps salt instead of sugar. Watches as he realizes too late.
“Oh! God!” Stede sputters, spitting the tea back into the cup. Mary’s still watching as he wipes his mouth with the back of his hand, face scrunched and bitter.

Sometimes I remember worrying that I was embarrassing when I started sharing my fanart. I fell so hard & so fast for our pirates. Then a pro comic artist I really look up to just out of the blue told me my OFMD stuff was "beautiful work". It was like he knew I needed to hear it right at that moment.
