Imagine showing a petrol engine to someone who had only known electric vehicles, and trying to convince them to switch to petrol. No-one would choose the dirty, noisy, less efficient, more expensive vehicle. This isn't 1910, hostage to gender insecurity. We can just choose the better tech.

Would you act on a risk that was ‘unlikely’ to happen?

How about one that has a ‘small chance’ of occurring?

Which one do you feel has more scientific consensus behind it?

Really relevant research into the words used for risks and how that changed people’s perceptions ⬇️

Desmond is still talked about here in Cumbria. Would the warnings, the recognition, the co-ordination, and even that collective remembering be as effective without the storm having a name?

“Scientists are still trusted messengers” … this research seems to show advocacy by scientists is context dependent, but can being benefits to the scientists and their audience when done well.
Scientists are becoming more visible in public climate debates, but the effects of this engagement are far from straightforward. We often hear strong claims about credibility and trust, yet what does the evidence say? Our new preprint explores this osf.io/preprints/ps...

What's the most important thing you can do for #climateaction?
Talk about it!
Stories in media are hugely influential - but so are your personal stories.
Buying second-hand (and saving money), cycling (and getting fitter), adding beans to your cooking (healthier and cheaper).
Do it, talk about it.
Look at storytelling in the news media about climate change over the last 25 years. Online vs print

I’ve just announced I’ll be leading a National Emergency Briefing on 27 November . At a time when climate is in free fall on the political agenda , it’s vital our leaders realise what is at stake if we do not accelerate a just , green transition for all .

If £1 = 1 second:

£43,200 = 12 hours
£1 million = 12 days
£1 billion = 31 years
£1 trillion = 31,688 years

Millions, billions and trillions all just sound like 'a lot' to most of us. We need a lot more of these comparisons when we talk about billionaires.
Maths...

If you make $100,000 a year (not bad), it will take you 10 MILLION years to earn a trillion dollars.

If you make a million dollars a year (wow!), it'll still take you a million years to earn a trillion dollars.

Tax the rich.

Ever feel a disconnect between extreme weather, high food prices and palpable effects of climate change - and ads enticing you to hop on a plane and buy more stuff?

This, by my wonderful friend @vikiharvey.bsky.social shows how the UK ad industry gets to mark its own homework and stay in denial.
If climate change is the wake up call, advertising is the snooze button.

Our senior consultant @vikiharvey.bsky.social looks at the role ad agencies in fueling the climate crisis.

Making an amount look impressive as cumulative, or look tiny as per use is a favourite marketing trick.
Just 10p a day!
You’ll save £300+ in a year!

But when something affects all of us, like total energy use and total climate pollution, should companies be forced to show both?
HEY friends: recently seen heaps of "disclosures" from AI companies of the energy cost per question you type into chatbots (most recently from Google)?

Presenting per-query 'efficiency' is part of big tech's efforts to hide its extremely real and happening-right-now climate impacts!
