Or he’s telling the truth and he spouts pro Russian propaganda for free.

Not to sound too conspiratorial, but I would have imagined he was advised to plead guilty to avoid a trial. Perhaps shining a light on the evidence might have made things very uncomfortable for those that are potentially implicated?
