Jim Crane wants to remain under the luxury tax this winter, but the Astros intend to add at least one starter and perhaps a left-handed hitter. Doing both of those things requires payroll shuffling. Sending Mauricio Dubón to Atlanta is the latest example - www.nytimes.com/athletic/682...
As part of Astros’ payroll reshuffling, Mauricio Dubón traded to Braves

The Astros traded Mauricio Dubón to the Braves on Wednesday night for Nick Allen. According to @mlbtraderumors.bsky.social Allen is projected to make $1.5 million in arbitration this winter. Dubón is projected to make $5.8 million. It is another money-saving swap for the Astros.
November 20, 2025 at 2:43 AM
The folks at @mlbtraderumors.bsky.social project Ramón Urías will make $4.4 million in arbitration. They have Mauricio Dubón at $5.8 million. The Astros were not going to pay ~$10.2 million to two utility players, especially with an already overcrowded infield. Hence today's move with Urías.
November 18, 2025 at 10:06 PM
The Astros designated Ramón Urías for assignment on Tuesday, clearing a 40-man roster spot for Miguel Ullola. The move protects Ullola from the Rule 5 Draft while alleviating some work for the Astros prior to Friday's non-tender deadline. Urías profiled as a non-tender or trade candidate

In what should come as no surprise, Framber Valdez declined the Astros’ qualifying offer, a source tells @theathletic.com, meaning Houston will receive draft pick compensation if Valdez signs elsewhere this winter.

Dana Brown said the Astros have to “firm up” their outfield. Part of that calculation: is Cam Smith the everyday right fielder? Brown made it clear today: Smith doesn’t have a guaranteed roster spot headed into spring training - www.nytimes.com/athletic/680...
As the Astros seek to ‘firm up’ their outfield, Cam Smith must prove he’s part of it
Smith has moved into a more precarious position within Houston’s organizational hierarchy. He must match his potential to change that.
