#OnThisDay, Dec 10, 1898, the Treaty of Paris ended the Cuban-Spanish-American War, marking a key moment in Puerto Rico's history. It granted the U.S. control over PR, the Philippines & Guam, while ensuring Cuba's independence from Spain. This treaty shifted PR into a new phase of colonialism.

#OnThisDay, Dec. 8, 1895, the Puerto Rico Section of the Cuban Revolutionary Party was founded in NYC, uniting Puerto Rico & Cuba in the fight for independence. Guided by Dr. Ramón E. Betances, it introduced 🇵🇷's flag & marked the diaspora's vital role in liberation efforts.

#OnThisDay, Nov 15, 1911, Salvador Tió y Montes de Oca was born in Mayagüez Puerto Rico. A poet and cultural promoter, he coined the term "Espanglish," exploring how Spanish and English blend in bilingual communities and shaping the study of language and identity.

#OnThisDay, October 30, 1950, the Jayuya Uprising took place. Nationalist Blanca Canales declared the Puerto Rican Republic, raising the flag for the first time. Rebels took control of Jayuya, opposing U.S. sovereignty, leading to bombing from P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes.

#OnThisDay, Oct 28, 1879, Luisa Capetillo was born in Arecibo, PR. A labor organizer, feminist & writer, she educated tobacco workers as a lector, fought for suffrage, education & labor rights, and was jailed in 1919 for wearing pants, defying gender norms & inspiring generations.
