After a rollercoaster year, it’s wonderful to spend some time just decompressing. Lulworth is N coast Tasmania, on the Bass Straight. Lots of wallabies, a couple good friends, huge stretches of beach and not a lot of people. Perfect!

One small change that I wish people who do research with international students would make is to stop saying "the international student experience" and use something like "international students' experiences" instead. They aren't singular or definitive.

#ASCILITE2024 was fun. Kudos for mostly very mindful Zoom hosting too and the asynchronous element of the SlowPosium (@gamerlearner.bsky.social @wentale.bsky.social) Nice to see moves towards more inclusive educational spaces. Lovely chatting with those I chatted with.

@czernie.bsky.social is 100% right. You want to make a difference? Get involved in your uni's procurement process of ed tech softwares (including GenAI).

Push back - ask thorny questions. Don't let them cut out the academic voice, especially the voice fighting for greater equity. #ascilite2024

Lisa Marie Blaschke’s keynote offers a deep and thorough view of heutagogy.
My big take away is that heutagogy ties together several key, desirable intentions: student agency, self-regulated learning, reflective practice and accurate self-evaluation.

Mehrasa Alizadeh compares Zoom vs virtual reality as learning platforms. No substantial differences in student engagement or outcomes, but the two platforms held very different appeal to participants. #ascilite2024 @ascilite.bsky.social

Margaret Bearman with a fundamental truth for AI and anything else we are attempting to collaboratively understand or implement: we have to come to some degree of mutual, definitional understandings.

Susan McKenney presents an excellent overview of necessary conditions for successful interventions. These apply well beyond higher ed tech.

Over a year later, I'm (finally) starting up on BS. I'll be shooting for a couple posts a week at first, mostly on educational issues of special interest to me: assessment, higher education, research methods, ed tech and the dynamic spaces in which they meet.

Aneesha Bakharia and I are planning on submitting a piece to LL. The topic is on using AI prompt engineering as an assessment task. The LIFT module option would be great for letting us show people what this looks like in action.
